The main concern like any other trailer would be a weight to weight ratio. Although the weight on a dog trailer would be significantly less loaded than say a horse trailer of the same size the physics of the matter is the same. You NEED to be able to come to a stop safely without rolling the car, trailer, or the combination of them both.
I would have few qualms about pulling a small empty utility trailer with my Ford Ranger. I have put a load or two on that vehicle though in hindsight that I'll never do again including hauling rather small boats, a load of manure (about 1/2 ton), and a U haul trailer over the rocky mountains in January. The truck made it without melting the brakes or destroying the transmission but I was taking a significant risk in the process both to myself and other people on the road. Just because it can tow it doesn't mean it should.
We pull fully loaded horse trailers with our trucks and I understand that it's more important to be able to stop, than to actually pull the load.
thanks everyone for your input. For now, I'll just continue to transport Rush with the van. Ed and I talked about the risk of someone hitting the trailer or some other accident, and we don't want to risk Rush's safety. (or anyone else's) I did just buy a new custom crate for the van so I need to get my money's worth out of that too.
Yep, I had it made at a plastics fabrication place in Edgerton MN. I sold it and bought a larger one a couple years ago.
Now I am thinking of selling my larger one again and getting a smaller light weight one I can tow behind a small 4cyl. pickup.
Once I move to the new place my driving will go up significantly and I would like to cut driving expenses a bit (and not wear out my Tahoe).
