I'm thrilled to pay the 89 cents they are charging me for backs to "flesh out" the whole Smart Chickens I buy. It cuts my cost waaaay down, and I feel like a dodo for not having asked before what they did with the backs. Turns out they use them to make stock for their deli foods and can spare as many as I want. I hope no one else figures out to ask for them. I know they do a brisk "pet food" business at the butcher counter, so they surely have a potential customer pool.

I can't find chicken necks/backs locally for less than $1.20/lb (and they aren't even organic, free range, or Connie's Special Chicken).
This is the only reason my dogs eat kibble.
I bought them a special treat last night, a whole fryer chicken. One meal = 10 bucks.
Don't forget to ask! I have never once seen backs out in the case, either at Safeway (or any of the other supermarkets near me) or at the small chain of natural food stores.
For example, when I finally did ask, it turned out that all they had to do at "my" store was tell the store that does all the deli prep to send some over with the next delivery. But I did have to ask, "Hey! What do you guys do with the backs when you cut up these 8-cuts?"
I called all the local butchers as well as the supermarkets. Butcher's prices were the same as the supermarkets. Minimum order 10 lbs, total cost 12.00.
However, reminding people to ask is always good: that's how you get the best deals!

Oh, and another board member has emailed me when Safeway has a sale on Cornish game hens .... just under $1/pound. A freezer full of those would be a treasure trove, and I think you have Safeway there too, right?
Costco here in MN sells whole fryer chickens for 89 cents a pound (a couple of years ago, I saw it at 69 cents). Is meat that much more expensive in other parts of the country? The grocery stores here want quite a bit more, but still not $10 for a whole fryer.
I wonder if fresh squirrel or rabbit would be safe. I think there was a thread on it last year. I have a ton of those things running around.
You are supposed to freeze the rabbit and or squirrel for at least 1 week to kill off the parasites. Myself I can't get past the cuteness. My pittyx brought one up on the deck about a week ago. I thought it was a log the way she tossed it at near feet. Later when I let them out again and the sun had come up I saw it was a squirrel. Had a line on whole rabbit for 1$ a pound, but so far I'm to squeamish to pick actually purchase them.

Safeway is only in Calif (former SF person here).
We get excellent RMBs, big boxes, so we buy in bulk and freeze. tripe source (someone who does it for the dogs, not for a business and really knows her stuff).
Need to do the stinky tripe run next week when we get back in the counttry. Visiting FIL. Raw is a mode of life for a lot of people we know over here.
