I think my dog respects me, for the reasons listed above, but I'm not sure since I don't technically live with him (I'm in between the boyfriend's and my mom's house until I finish the last of my college classes - 6 more to go!) so I'm not sure that I can be an in and out pack leader.
But I do notice that when I'm there he follows me around, and waits for my direction. I've noticed that our roommate's out of control dog acts more respectably (or obediently, not sure which one..) when I'm there, too. And since our roommate allows any sort of behavior, I've certainly noticed the way the dogs act with me compared to with him (and all his friends that fawn over the dogs the minute they walk through the door). And I'm not the only one who's noticed the difference, I've had other people comment on it too.
So I'm not sure if the dogs truly respect me as pack leader, since I'm not there 24/7, or if it's just the way I carry myself.
Amazing... I will now add creative writing to the already long list of enlightening reasons I come to Leerburg.
And I know my dog respects me because... I've never given him any reason not to. He knows he'll get nothing but fairness from me; he knows there are rules in his life and he never breaks them (even when I'm not looking); and he knows I will always help and protect him, even if he's in pain (which is why I'm the first one he comes to if he's hurt himself). He has consistently given me his trust, and I like to think we respect each other.
It doesn't hurt that he also knows I'm good for 2 square meals a day, and an ice cream cone at least once a year...
How it happens is a complete mystery to me Steve.
I still marvel how instinct takes over......it just happens.
Now I'm hungry. And presto! Now I'm foraging, stuffing my face with the wolf cubs waiting patiently just beyond the circle of light for the odd scrap I might discard.
Do I have my dog's respect? Absolutly not, we just enter into negotiations and compomise alot, it's like I got to deal with Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamsters everyday

Yeah. Look at that game face she wears to the negotiation table.

Nah, teach them if you can Connie.
It'll be like teaching them to be a hunting partner.
Oh man.... this is so O.T. I ran to answer the phone once, leaving the fridge door open, and when I came back, they were all lined up, gazing in there with wonder like they had found the Promised Land, each one concentrating on the shelf he was tall enough for, nothing visible to me but butts and wagging tails.....
