Not to argue but to raise a point. Mike you said "LIVING AS DOGS SHOULD" That is the key phrase. Dogs are meat eaters pure and simple. We humans are the ones that took what was once a natural raw meat species appropriate diet and turned it into "FAST FOOD" because it suited our needs not theirs. I know for some feeding raw is just not possiable but if anyone tells me again that as Lois stated "CRAPINABAG" is good for my dog I will BARF (no pun intended).
Lots of dogs eat poop for lots of different reasons and (for most), we'll never know the truth. We certainly can't ask.
There are a few main reasons...a) starved dog; some dogs will resort to eating their own feces for nutrients when deprived of food b) they seem to enjoy the taste, smell or texture. Then again...most dogs will eat all kinds of poop...cat, geese, bird..whatever.
In my experience, "Forbid" and such products never worked on some of my dogs that have had coprophagia. Some dogs grow out of it, some don't. It's really a nasty trait...I suggest just doggie bagging your dog's mess right after he/she is done.
All those digestive aids didn't work for us. We tried all the popular brands.
Pineapple didn't work for us either.
What DID work? A combination of negative reinforcement, better dieting, and picking up the poop.
#1 - we baited him with poop we didn't pick up, waited for him to chomp, first chop and BAM highest level with the e-collar. Baited him to check progress once every week. Around 4 weeks we saw some progress. On good days, if he sniffed and started to walk away, I'd run to the door, recall him and give him a treat.
#2 - we moved to Wellness, which I know is not the "best" or better than raw, but on our budget, it's the best I can afford. - We also took him OFF the vitamins our breeder told us to use (might have helped). They were $200 a bottle, but I promised to keep him on it for 6 months. Kept my word. Subsituted a raw egg and/or other organic goodies from time to time (as opposed to store dog-snacks).
#3 - we were diligent about picking up the poop in the yard. This was just to get him out of the habit (too much temptation sometimes). I live on 5 acres, so it was harder than you'd think. All except when one was close enough to a security camera so I could watch if pup came near it to chomp. This was the "bait". Damn I love technology. The e-collar can issue a correction from the house.
3 months of this until he broke the habit. Man, like, every day. Now he'll sniff, but not chomp.
He did regress once. But since we brush his teeth all the time, we're pretty sure it was just that once.
So yucky. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
