I am pretty sure you should not compost dog poop. I am a master gardener and in all of my composting classes they always said absolutely don't put it in the compost pile. You really should be careful with fresh cow and horse manures as well. Now, these dog septic system look promising, but if your soil is not well drained, then it will be poop soup...
Toronto composts dog poop, cat poop, meat, etc along with other organics, but I can't say what the compost is used for.
I have tried the plastic outdoor garbage can with lid. That definitely did not work. It cooked in the summer sun and made the smell like 20 times worse. And taking the lid off was such a horrible experience, I never want to repeat it. I actually felt bad for any neighbour within 100 feet. Have not tried metal, but I assume metal is not immune to heating up in the sun.
Glad to know the septic systems don't work before I waste any money. I do have clay soil.
I had a dog septic at my old house and loved it. When we moved here I started out with a dedicated garbage can that had a snap on lid but even the neighbors knew when I took the lidt off that thing...Id puke if I didn't hold my breath. We finally got around to putting in the dog septic here. I was afraid it wouldnt work that good because we have a ton of clay but so far so good. Used it all summer. My neighbors are sure glad we switched form the garbage can method!
Yeah, the plastic can smelled even with the lid on, only not too bad. When I had to remove the lid, oh man! :barf: totally not worth it. I'm just thinking that with metal the same problem would happen - it's when the lid is removed with my face in the vicinity that is the problem. There isn't really a convenient shady option. And I would hesitate to put it in the garage....
