getting back to the original poster, if you decide to get a "mild" working line shepherd the up side is usually a healthy puppy that is very quick to learn, the downside is even the "calm" ones require regular mental and physical excercise and can get quite assertive. It will be a hobby that requires alot more time then say a beagal or other couch tater types
Well, I don't want a couch potato dog, thats for sure. Time is something that I do have. My concern is with my own ability, as I have not trained a dog before. I consider myself an intelligent person (but then again, who doesn't consider themselves intelligent?). I know that I don't know enough, but I do feel confident in my ability to learn. I also know that you can never know enough, and with most things, you have to be open minded to new ideas and methods. What I don't want to do is to put myself in a situation where I am always playing catch up, where I am attempting to fight the dogs natural abilities and instincts, because that will never work. I believe that I need to be able to learn how to channel the dogs abilities into behaviors that work for me and him. Do I have that right?

is near me, and I plan on attending one of the upcoming training sessions to meet some of the members and hopefully learn some more.

Tom
well then problem solved, those guys can get you a puppy I'm sure, just let them know what your training goals are
Dennis, when you going to come down here and visit us for a weekend of training?
I'd love too and you've given me and idea, "She who must be Obeyed" insists that we vacation at Nags Head, I want to go to doggy camp, I may be able to talk her into a trip to Fla. I spent my teen age years in Clearwater/Dunedin and Nags Head doesn't even come close
