What are you guys spending per pound on RMB? I have shopped it some but I must not be a bargain shopper. lol
65lb female GSD, very active, receives a lot of exercise daily:
Breakfast:
½ lb + or - chicken necks or backs or part of a chicken quarter = $0.35
¼ lb + or – ground meat (venison, hamburger 73% lean, mackerel) = $0.25
Supper:
1 lb + or - chicken necks or backs or part of a chicken quarters = $ 0.69
¼ lb + or – ground meat (venison, hamburger 73% lean, mackerel) = $.25, unless it’s hunting season than it’s much, much more per pound…
1 egg every other day = $.08 every other day
2000 mg vit C = $ 0.10 per day
¼ teaspoon spirulina = $0.05 per day
400 UI vit E = $0.07 per day
3 pumps high quality salmon oil = $0.30 per day
1 small spoon full of plain organic yogurt = $0.21 per day
Totals about $2.35 per dog per day if they eat an egg
And if my math is right , you might want to re-add!!
My puppy costs about $30.00 a day but that factors in replacing warm-up pants regularly….

Some days it is really expensive, and others fairly cheap.
It can range from the price of a bullet for 100 lbs. of venison to the price of collision repair to the front of a pickup truck for the same weight of venison.

Between my six dogs the normal food bill around here is about $3-5 a day. I do a 50% kibble 50% raw diet. I am also a power shopper, use coupons, and buy very high end foods for no more than $35 a bag, I hit up the butcher shops for stuff a day past the pull date, and try to buy alot at a time for bulk savings, use up leftovers (my veggies are pulp left over from juicing), and have an extra freezer full of dog food. It takes a little bit of effort but I have what is likely a year worth of dog food on hand and am able to pick and choose based upon sale prices, vary diets more than most, and I'm seeing awesome results doing it. I swear I could feed my dogs taco flavored boot leather at this point and they wouldn't have a gastric blowout.
Really Raw fooding can be fun! Your butcher can be a member of the family, you can build community connections, and save money in the long haul.
But hilarious - which is arguably more important sometimes...
Alas, those of us without regular access to rural back roads, or a gun permit, are left relying on fickle 3rd party butchers to set our meat prices for us...
Being in a big farming state, I go to where they butcher the cows and get what they call beef dust or saw dust for ground beef, its actually little bits of every part of the cow, I get it 25cents a pound. I have a troyers food which is a distributer to grocery stores for chicken turkey duck and some others, I get 40pound case for 11 dollors. The kidneys I will be getting free from the cow butchering place, because they dont have any demand for them. There are some venison places here I'm going to check into tomorrow for prices I can let you know about if you would like. I know Troyers is usa wide so I can check to see where the closest one to you would be. The most expensive thing for me is the supplements, I dont know if this helps you at all
My GSD pup Riese is a little over 4 months old and weighs in at 28.5 pounds. She is eating about a pound give or take of premium kibble a day. It's costing her about $1.28-$1.30 a day not including training treats. I don't charge her for her water!
I have done a little research this evening and found frozen chicken backs for .68 cents a pound. That includes shipping as well.
I have never really sat down and calculated the costs. Riese is not our only pet. We have a total of six which includes a couple of cats. RMB can be about the same if not less expensive even when you factor in the supplements that may be aded in the future and this does not include the cost benfits of a healthy dog.
When she finishes this bag of kibble we are going to change.
Thanks to everyone for the comments and advice. It is greatly appreciated!
