I have mostly had people freaked out by the germs and the bones, once I point out that raw chicken bones are rubbery and don't splinter they usually stop and then sort of nod.
When it comes to the comments about the salmonella or germs I just smile and point out that dogs regularly eat poop, week old dead animals and anything else they can get their mouths on.
Since that doesn't generally do them any harm I'm not worried about fresh, well handled meat making them sick.
It is so helpful to read the thoughts of others. I do understand Bob's reaction. When I was first introduced to the concept, my jaw kind of dropped. But I was open to learning about it, then learned more, then...well, here I am, and glad of it. Food can be a trigger to real emotional issues, and I don't want my husband to have friction with his friend over it. This helps a lot.
I usually just try to provide a polite and brief explanation of my stance. It works more often than not. Even if the other person doesn't agree with you they usually respect that you that you did the research and took the time to explain it. Some people are just Summer's Eve products and aren't really worth the effort, though.

This is a great observation. When we say "Well, I read up very carefully on what a canid is designed to eat; I did the research, including books and other material by vets with degrees in nutrition," it's going to be very difficult for most people challenging you to say "I call your careful research and raise you my vet with a specialty in nutrition."
Before I moved away from New York, I was the NYC Sales Rep for Merrick Pet Foods. It really is amazing how so many people are more firmly wedded to their own ideas on how to feed dogs then they are to there spouses. My new puppy won't be coming until early spring, and I am not sure if I will be doing a raw diet, but I will be damned if I would be critical of someone for doing so. And someone who is using Purina or some other crap like it really has no standing for being critical.
I work at an animal shelter, we feed raw. We had a dog we adopted out and got returned due to aggression towards strangers, the owners trainer said to them to get off the raw as it was making her more agressive. Huh? Is that a joke? Nobody's honestly that daft are they? Wheres the logic?
old age means realizing you will never own all the dogs you wanted to- unknown
I feed Mainly Hi quality kibble.
But Phoenix does get 2 raw meals a week Sunday and Wednesday.
I have been asked question along the line of has she ever been bit.
I got negative feedback from my first vet. A I get weird looks at the grocery store when i buy stuff out of season.
I normally say if someone says something. She is my dog and I will do what I like with her. You do the same for your dog normally that ends what ever convo is happening
