Don't worry Matt-I know it's aggravating, but pretty soon your pup will be much larger and these same folks will be crossing the street to avoid you. Just nod and smile, lol.
Its pretty much that way everywhere. A friend of my wife came over the other day and was horrified that I "kept that poor little puppy in a cage". She has no idea what kind of trouble that poor little puppy would cause outside of her crate when I wasn't there to supervise her. I'd be buying all new furniture .
Another good reason to avoid dog parks - One of my co-workers was kicked out of a public dog park in Boulder CO about a week ago by the other outraged owners. His crime was correcting his 8 month old pup for being too rough. His correction was a firm no and a swat on the nose with his index finger. Not my style but not exactly abuse. The other owners told him not to come back until he could control his dog without hitting it.
Thanks for all the thoughts!!! I think I can look at these people with an even greater understanding of how ridiculous they really can be and just laugh it off.
As for following Ed's tapes, I'm doing my best and it has been really rewarding thus far. Watching these tapes has given me a whole new perspective on training and I now realize how crappy some of the training books I have read really are.
HA! That's when you're REALLY gonna lose it!
All those idiots telling you how 'meeeean'
you are...find a screenprinting shop & print a bandana for your pup to wear that says "I'm smarter than you are" on it!
I look up at the person with the warmest most friendly unassuming smile I have and I say something really nice like. . ."-F- off".
If you do it in a really nice voice, as if it were something nice like, "beautiful day isn't it". They will immediately do a double take. Maintain the happy smile and warm facial expression.
That's when I smile bigger and say it again, more pointedly. . . with even more happy friendly emphasis. "-F- off."
This will always get a really shocked look and maybe the beginings of a retort, at which time I'll cut in quickly to explain.
"Yeah. . .I said -F- you. That means that you can go -F- yourself."
"Have a nice day."
And I walk off ignoring any further communications.
Ya beat me to it VC. These kind of people aren't open to any opinion other than theri own.
True story:
Several years ago, I imported an East German GSD, a very dark sable, for a mid-size PD. I was checking the dog out for it's reaction to slick floors at a Pet Smart, and some yuppie couple came along and asked me what type of dog it was. As a gag, I answered "A Bavarian Flugel Hound" and, I swear to God, the male of the couple said, "See, I thought that's what it was" and walked away looking very smug and satisfied with himself.
I still laugh every time I think of that idiot.....
