My opinion is don't mess around with a showlines dog, they suck, LOL.
Al, with all due respect, you can't have it both ways. I've seen "newbies" or people with little or no training experience chastised for even considering a working line dog and told to look for another type of dog. Here we have a family who has never owned a dog before and you are saying "show lines suck and get a working line".
Which is it? Is a working line dog perfect for people with absolutely no dog training experience and who work 10 hours a day or would they perhaps be better suited for a dog who may not have an extremely high level of drive and energy. Not which dog is better for you with YOUR level of experience, but for THIS particular family...
And let me say, I understand that a good breeder, and I know Betty is in that category, can select a puppy appropriate for the family - assuming that dog is available in any given litter, but I still don't think that this means a working line GSD is the only answer for a family wanting their first GS. JMHO.

Did't mean to sound like I was jumping all over Al - I should have said "we can't have it both ways", blah, blah, blah.

I disagree Barbara, The GSD is the best for a family, and the kind of thinking you just wrote out is exactly what has made showlines pretty much a different breed of dog. 1rst or 5th dog still needs time and training, the OP can learn, it's not that hard, WL dogs are easier to train than a mopey showlines. Get an appropriate working lines dog!

It has been decided, we are getting this gsd Reason he was not sold, he was going to be showed but it could not be. He only has one testicle. He is very healthy, has very good hips and elbows, everything a show breeder would want, but the missing testicle I guess is a no no when trying to enter shows, competitions etc.. He is currently crate trained, leash trained and house trained. I already have a local trainer set up to do training with. He is a very good trainer/breeder, has been doing it all for over 40 years. I did manage to set up a little thing with my cousin, where she can come over in the middle of the day and let him out, walk him etc..

I think its totally a matter of the person and how willing they are to do the work.
ALL dogs need training, no doubt.
When you have a dog that has generations of breeding to simply be a pet he will probably just be a rambunctious jerk without solid training. But with a working line dog your whole life can quickly turn into a nightmarish episode of the Dog Whisperer.
Its absolutely possible for someone to learn as they go. I'm doing it with no regrets. The OP might be willing to do it. But a lot of people won't.
The breeder my dog came from shared some very sad stories with me about people who didn't do the work when she interviewed me. Some of these stories ended with the dogs being euthanized by people who didn't do the work and were unwilling or unable to send the dog back.
She is a very responsible breeder, and I'm glad she told me about these people. While she wasn't trying to scare me off, she wanted me to understand how important 110% commitment is.

Into the budget for the new prospect should be the removal of the retained testicle.
Retained testicles often cause problems down the road. This surgery is USUALLY easy, but not always -- it is like a "spay" vs. a castration, meaning it's abdominal surgery, except the retained testicle can be a little hard to find.
This would be by no means a deal-breaker, but it is something you maybe should be aware of.

Frank,
I want to wish you all the very best with your new male GSD!
No matter if the dog is showline or working line, as long as you train him and develop the bond and pack leadership, you will have a wonderful dog for your family.
For what it is worth, I have two showline GSD's. They require a lot from me and are still a handful. But that said, they are working out great for me and my family.
Consistency, good pack leadership, with training and exercise, (regardless of the type of lines you go with) will produce a great family dog.
Best wishes to you and your family.

Sounds like the dog is going to have a nice home. Be sure to post a picture. And be prepared for some adolescent antics!!
