I doubt it will make much difference.
Ticks are active above 32 degrees F, and inactive below 32F. As soon as the temps go above 32F, they're active.
It has to get really cold (I don't remember the temp, but it was somewhere in the range of absolute zero, probably  ) to actually kill ticks.
As far as the DE goes, I feed it in every meal, cats and dog.

Dang. Leih, do you use any pesticides in addition to the DE? I really, really hate the idea of Frontline and it's ilk. Seems so counter-intuitive to put a poisonous substance IN my dog.

For my cats, nothing. The vets have tried to get me to use Advantage, but I really don't want to. I do believe that a healthy, raw-fed animal with a strong immune system is much less susceptable to things. However, during tick season, I check my kitties a couple of times a day, as they can't remove the ticks that attach around their heads. They've never seemed to me to be bothered by fleas.
With my dog, I did use Frontline, tho not year around; same with heartworm meds.
With my next pup, I'm still not certain about what I'll do about Frontline. I believe I could manage without it for fleas, tho the management is a PITA, but it's the ticks that bother me. We have a lot of them in VA, and in the spring when you have the nymphs, it's just hell trying to find them. But, I HATE using it, that's for sure.

Leigh, Have you tried the DE externally yet?
FYI... I just received my first order from http://www.countrysidenatural.com and was thrilled with the pricing and shipping. $25.00 for 50# and 13.00 for shipping. :-) MUCH less than anywhere else I've found.
Anyone reading this post who has never used or heard of the product - you MUST only use FOOD GRADE DE. There are other types on the market used for other purposes which would be toxic to you or your animals. FOOD GRADE only.
What the heck... I'm going to start it on the chickens, dogs, cats and even take it myself to see if any of the claims are true.

Someone emailed me that data sheet late last year. I have had a sticky note on my computer ever since to remind me to read it (and to look up Science Lab, which was where the MSDS I received came from originally).

· Do NOT get diatomaceous earth in the eyes. DE is drying to the eyes, so do NOT put it out when you or your pets are down wind of it. DE is drying to your skin, hands, and feet, just as it can be to your pets.

So far, I've only used it internally for my pets. But, I am considering using it externally. The first link that Matthew provided was pretty generic in its warnings...I will be very curious to learn more before embarking on this path.

There seems to be some definite reason for concern regarding inhilation, but I'm not clear as to how concerned I should be as to ingestion. There are some comments on skin irritation. I'm interested to see what you think Leih after reading all this. Wish I had seen this before ordering 100#!! LOL!
