He finally did it! 45 minutes of us staring each other in the eye and he finally decided to go down. He got such good stuff that he did it again and again. I don`t think I`ll have to fight him on this anymore. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I`ve already started to eliminate treats and so far no problems there.
I stepped on the leash and waited until he lay down. I guess he was just getting tired from sitting there so long. I`m glad I only had to do that once. I think from the eye contact it might have been a dominance thing because he was just staring me right in the eye the whole time. I ordered the basic obedience video so maybe that will explain stuff better.
Is your Boxer toy driven at all or do you exclusively use food as your reward? Now that you know your dog understands the command you can start working a wee little bit with getting your dog into drive either with a toy or perhaps with treats and then working on the down in the same way.
The more we take advantage of the natural drives of the dog, the quicker the turn around in training you tend to see. You will see working in drive as a re-occurring theme in many of Ed’s tapes…..it’s the only way to go!
No, he really isn`t toy-driven that much. I wish he was. Our lab loves to chase and play with his ball and it`s so much easier and fun with a ball reward. I use food because it`s just about the only thing that motivates him. He will chase the leash knot if I move it around so he might have a little bit of drive. I`m not sure. It would be nice though.
