I have had GSD's my entire life and Pap's for the past twenty years. Is your Pap showing any other signs of illness? Do you have a cat litter box that he can get at? If so, Pap's think these are dining carts and the ingestion of the litter, especially clay types, can cause this to happen...just like you mentioned...concrete!

Google "liver flukes" in dogs.
I think those occur in the NW. I think they can be in bile ducts. I think you can treat that with ivermectin/or some sort of parasite Rx.
It wouldn't show up in a fecal.
Maybe if you talk to your small animal doctor.
I could be making this up in my head, but I think I remember something about parasites in bile ducts.

No, I don't own a cat. The litter I do use with the papillons is a wood pellet kind of like wood stove pellets. Really he's more of an indoor dog, even when he's outside it's normally on the end of a 4-6 foot lead. My backyard has been a mudpit since late November so we don't go running out there much right now with these guys since they soak up water like mop heads.

Liver flukes do live in bile ducts... I've not seen a snail here but we do have slugs and I do bait them quarterly with SLUGGO. I haven't fed guts like tripe or liver that haven't been frozen for months in ages BUT it's a good idea of something to check into even with the dogs getting DE 2x a week. Depending on what Dr Lance tells me Monday it may be worth checking into. Thanks

No, if it is second nature or something similiar in color it should not cause that discoloration. I just know that the Paps are notorious for consuming things that they shouldn't, and because he shows no other signs of illness, I started there. A previous post mentioned that he has had prior liver/bile acud testing and it was normal. Usually the ALT and ALP bloodwork will be out of range with gall bladder problems, it will be interesting to hear what this new bloodwork shows!

Well the good news is that I heard something and it appears so far no infection. The bad news is now we need to see a specialist to see if the gall bladder needs to be removed or cleared manually.
I'm a little cautious that just rubberstamping yes let's remove this organ will be what the specialist recommends because why fiddle around with less extreme treatments when you can just hack the sucker out, although I know he could live without a gall bladder.

He read off a string of information that I didn't quite understand since I'm not a medical person. So I asked him what he thought of it and he said we should follow up with a specialist because something is either very wrong between the liver, the pancreas, and the gall bladder structurally, the liver is messed up, these are very bad stones which will need to be broken up and removed or remove the gall bladder altogether. So... to the specialist we go.

I was reading the older posts and did not see that he has had an ultrasound. I am sure the specialist will do one, and then you will have a clearer picture of what you are actually dealing with. Hopefully he will present the alternative therapy available and not just the conventional!
Keep us posted!

IME, anytime poop is grey/white, there's a liver (or associated) issue. best of luck melissa, that this is easily "resolvable". keep us updated, ok?

Well the appointment is made for Monday next week, so long as he doesn't go yellow between now and Monday I think we'll be alright. He doesn't appear to be in any pain or even wanting to slow down.
