Just heard back from our trainer and this was his opinion as well. I guess I expected a very specific reaction after watching the DVD. We are seeing him tomorrow weather permitting.
If you have twitching, then he's definately feeling it. Every dog's reaction is a little different. Mine doesn't blink- he either turns his head to the side like he's got an itch or flicks his ears a little. If he gets a stronger correction for pouncing on cats, he shakes his head. Still not enough to make him yip.
Shaving his neck in that spot really helped. It created a nice little nook for the collar to rest.
First, your dog is feeling the stimulation. He should not be hiding under anything. You need to rub the collar box back and forth a couple of times to make sure that the points are touching. If...the dog's neck is twitching, he is feeling the stim. HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THE STIM!!!!!
Please put the leash on the dog, place the collar correctly, step backwards, and at the same time tap, tap, tap, on the nick button, most generally at level 21 on a fully charged collar, give a come command (if he knows it)and gently pull on a buckle collar. As soon as the dog takes a step, mark with a yes, stop hitting the nick button and give the dog a treat.
Let me know how it goes.
Roni
Thank you Roni, this is *exactly* what our trainer showed us yesterday and it worked! Still it took 55 to get his attention and then we went down to 40 because he's got the idea. The females are both at around 20, one of them liked the training and started to anticipate the commands and perform enthusiastically while the other did not want anything to do with us. We'll be doing very short sessions with single commands, 'come' and 'sit' this week in addition to the positive-only sessions. When they are 100% solid at home we'll be taking it outside with long lines.
