I'd make sure your vet checks for tick born illnesses, too. Rocky mountain spotted fever can result in sudden and severe aggression. (I am not at all suggesting this is the case with your dog, but it's something I'd want checked by my vet in the same circumstance.)

Hi Nancy,
I would take him to the vet for a blood panel. I took in a rescue GSD that started suddenly showing aggressive behavior{out of the blue} like you describe, it turned out that he had hypothyroidism and hypoglycemia.
No vacs at all. Kind of ironic, having researched the after effects of vacs for many years I refuse to vac him as this kind of off-the-top behavior is famous for being caused by shots, especially rabies, which can affect the neurological system and cause dogs to become neurotic, nervous, aggressive, fearful, etc.

My brain is mush, but didn't I read someplace that the thyroid can cause issues like this? Either an over or under production of the good stuff it pumps into the system.

Yep abnormal thyroid levels can cause this - under production can cause aggression as can over production. Still not enough research but my mother has an underactive thyroid and she can get pretty aggressive at times
