I actually just learned the "trading the ball" trick the other day. Up until then, I had to pry it out of his mouth. I do need to buy a long line. With all the other fancy products I've bought (and gone broke on), that's one I haven't. I think I'll just look and see if we have any cheap rope down our basement. He tends to take the ball and run away with it right now. My daughter has tried turning her back to him, but he will then grab a hold of her leg and either hump it or bite her butt, leg, or arm.

Check your other thread, I made comments relating to this. I can also in detail describe how I get dogs to walk at my wide in about 20 min on average.
Let me know if you want me to post that.

Kelly: I too was the proud owner of a "puppy from Hell". You'll
get great advise here. I was having a terrible time with
"grabbing my arm" while playing, so I kept an extra ball
hidden in my pocket the redirecting worked like a charm. If it
helps any your pup will out grow all this in time, it took mine
2 years but she is now a pleasure. Walks next to me ( I call it
the Cesar Milan walk ) like a perfect lady. No issues anymore
with grabbing, no butt bites for attention, and no mouthing.
Hang in there. Things will get better but it takes work. Good luck.

Well, I just made my own long leash and we went out in the yard to try fetch. First, when I threw the ball, in mid chase, he got distracted and went off to do his own thing. Then, when I did finally get him to bring one back and tried to get him to drop it by tossing the other ball, he jumped up, got a hold of the ball I was tossing along with my finger, and wouldn't let go of it!

Hi Kelly,
I had the exact same problem when my dog, Greta, at that age. The sharp puppy teeth hurt. My husband would come home and let her play bite and yipe when she bit too hard, he said it was natural for them to play bite and that is how they learned bite inibition, or something like that. He said she would grow out of it.
Well, that was fine for him, but I wasn't going to let her bite me , play biting or not. The basic problem is that I wanted her to learn to stop biting when I said "no bite" and I am not big on letting any pet dog bite, even in play.
She was driving me crazy with her biting so I finally got a spray bottle and gave her a sudden spray in the face immediately after I gave her a "no bite" command when she still had her little teeth in my leg. Boy, that did it. I did that for about 2 days and never had to spray that bottle again. I just showed her that bottle with the command and she learned "no bite" real quick.
My husband still lets her play bite with him in some game they play outside. Once in a great while I come home and she is exited to see me and puts my arm in her month. All I say is "no bite" and she stops and licks me.
She is 17 months old now and when my daughter brings her old dog over to my house, Greta my dog, wants to play and she sometimes gets too rough and over excited. All I have to say is "I am going to get the bottle" and she walks away from the dog.
As far a getting the dog not to pull, I had to use marker training in the back yard for her to get the idea.
I don't know if the water bottle works on all puppies and I would never over use it because I think that the pup would get use to it, but it was the only thing that worked for me.
Best, Anna

Second on the water bottle. That is one thing that works EVERY TIME with Ranger. He too knows 'I'm gonna get the spray' and stops whatever he's doing wrong & slinks to his chair. This includes begging while we eat (or even 'eye-ing' our food), chasing the cats, digging in the trash, and tiffs with the other dogs.
Also he was a big nipper when young -- I couldn't keep his teeth off me! So I never took him out of the crate or let him in from the yard without a stuffed toy in my hand. The first time he'd open his mouth I would gently shove the toy in his mouth & say 'good boy, bite toy, bite it' while I petted him & he got calmed down. Now when he comes in (1.5 years old) he will grab a toy himself before he greets me! Saves lots of wear 'n tear on the arms!!

It was suggested awhile back that my dd use the water bottle. Do you squirt it right at his face? She was avoiding the face. Part of the problem is that she forgets to carry it half of the time!

What is dd?
Yes, just spray right in the face, plain water. It should only take a few days and then you don't have to spray at all, just show the bottle and say "I am going to get the bottle". Once your dog understands, "I am going to get the bottle", he should immediately stop without even having the bottle there.
My dog never even sees a bottle now, I just say the words and she just stops.
Hope this works for you. Anna

A spray bottle!!???
That was suggested and touted here at LB ????!!!!!
Well, whats next? Shake cans? Thrown rings of keys?
Oh oh, I know fingers down the throat.
Or how about a nice dominate collar for the pup?
Kelly, try the search function. You'll find about a gazillion threads just like your question. And about five (if that many) of the same good answers to all of them.
None of them say anything about spray bottles, thrown rings, fingers down the throat, or dd collars.
