I wouldn't use sheets, they are an increased smothering hazard. Think of it this way... mom will rearrange those sheets easily trapping a puppy in them.
I used medium cheap towels I wasn't going to miss but my dogs aren't as bad on them as bigger dogs. they still got shredded... but still remain part of my dog towel collection to this day.
Alot of people swear by newspaper strips, I also know people who swear by straw. Really if it absorbs well, a puppy can't get squashed under/ wrapped in them, isn't so fine that it gunks up eyes, and is easily cleaned, it's a winner. Personally, I'll be using towels again.
Wont towels offer the same issue in a round pool as a sheet? Pup gets underneath or wrapped up in it? ugh. i might just do newspaper i guess. i dont wanna lose any to something easily avoidable

Yes, it's possible but unlikely since a single towel tends to not fold and catch stuff but rather just crumples up. We're not talking a ton of towels but just one - two spread out for absorbency and changed out as needed. http://www.inarifarm.com/groupweek3%20overhed.jpg I didn't have a girl intent on burying puppies while she rearranged the bedding or ripping apart the towel. If I did have a girl that I had that concern with I'd use newspaper.
One more question everyone. My dog is a tiny pit bull, approx 40 lbs and 15", and I planned on getting the 4 ft across plasic pool
Which side of the heat mat should I get? the small or the med? exactly how much of the whelping area should be heated-- if I use the small one will the pups have issues findin their warm spot? If I use the med one will it make it too warm?

Personally I'd go with the medium. These heat pads have a million uses and right now mine is being used to start plant seedlings. Why get a small one when a medium one can be an old dog warmer?
I wouldn't worry about it making them too warm because there will be room to get off the heat mat.
