Just wanted to add-
Good for you for taking in a rescue. You'll find great advice here, and read the marker training e-book a few times. It took me that long to completely 'get it'.
Hi,
Thank you so much for your post. Yes, Hannah seems a lot like your dog. This past week my gut feeling has been to stop "formal training" and just work on bonding, playing, etc. And I have started giving her treats. Although she's not highly food motivated. Maybe that will change. I think she needs time to adjust to her new "forever" home and feel safe and secure.
She does follow me around the house to no end! She likes to be with me everywhere. But there's no spark in her eyes. Almost like she's always worried. But she does love to play with other dogs. That is when I've seen her very happy.
Welcome to the forum. You'll get wonderful advice here, but expect your needs to come 2nd to your dog's here. (As it should be, imo.)
Be your girl's advocate. If your gut and common sense tell you that something doesn't seem right, listen to that voice. Even though you're new to this you know your dog best and it's your job to stick up for her. There are a lot of whacko dog trainers out there, as well as some truly wonderful people who know how to teach people to teach their dogs.
Enjoy your time with your dog. Building a relationship with her based on trust is the best thing you can do.
Marker training, marker training and then marker training. Easy with practice, simple concept, and should have your girl begging for training before you know it.
I think Erika had a nightmare and made that comment using Dennis' computer... She probably had to fetch one too many beers that day, poor pup. (We alll have bad days every now and then...)
Hi,
Yes, my sister-in-law recommended Leerburg to me and I feel very good about learning from this website.
This is the first time in my life I have posted anything on a website. Big step for me but I did it for Hannah! I want to learn to be the best dog owner I can for her. I am very happy to receive everyones comments so far today -- and so fast!
you might want to check your tone of voice, I have one dog that I have to use my "happy voice" otherwise he'll shutdown, has nothing to do with his life experiences, he's just a big softy. My other two, Erika and Roxie. I can be sharp, loud and clear for distant commands.
What you might want to try is just call out her name and when she looks at you, give a big happy "Yes" and treat with a really yummy treat like piece of hot dog or liver. Do this before her main meal of the day. do this in half hour sessions at least once a day for at least a week
Melissa,
I just have to say that link you emailed me is awesome! I'm reading more and more on the Leerburg website in general as well.
But my dog Hannah definitely suits short spurts of "training" over the 15-30 minutes my (now former) trainer advises. He made me feel guilty if I didn't put in 20-30 minute training periods with her. And yes, if I tried to do that I had to use force.
Now I am reading up on marker training and feel that is what I should focus on now with Hannah.
I feel happy now for my dog Hannah and myself. I am so glad I have received all of this wonderful advice from this web board.
Thanks again..........C
