I think that any time that the general public thinks about and thanks our service men and women, is the "correct" day.
I light a candle and say a prayer for our fallen heroes on all of the holidays (including Christmas, New Years, and Easter).. it is how I memorialize their sacrifice. I also do the same for those that are currently serving, as my own little thanks for what they are doing for myself and our country.
Without all of them, living and past, we would not have what we have.

As I said, everyone honors the dead in their own way. In the hopes of avoiding yet another s-storm, my PM box is open if anyone wishes to discuss this with me.

A moving "merging" of the two remembrance/honoring days is the fact that so many veterans come to the Memorial Day observances. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's; last year's was a great opportunity to meet many folks who might even be neighbors I didn't know. It's a kind of public sharing that is pure good (IMHO).
Taps is being heard all over the nation today. Though there are no official words for the melody (as it was originally a bugle call), several renditions have been created. The following is my favorite:
"Thanks and praise, For our days,
'Neath the sun, Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh."
"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived."
—General George S. Patton
It's not "either or" for me. It's both.
The sky is blue...
edit:
Whatever, I'm going to get argued with no matter what I post. I was born and raised on a USAFB as the son of an E9 who spent 2.5 years in 'Nam doing both recon and sniper work. I choose to honor what the man taught me about this day. You don't have to like it but, you don't have the right to tell me that I'm wrong either.

You are entitled to your opinion. As is EVERYONE on this board. That means that we can ALL believe as we want without being ridiculed by anyone else.
NOBODY has ever said you were wrong, Scott. Personal beliefs were stated. That's all. To each his own. Live and let live.
I choose to honor the living and the dead today. I have the flag of a fallen Marine in my home. I honor the soldiers that fought at his side. The difference is that THEY came home alive. He did not. They would have gladly taken his place. It is THAT "CODE" that I honor today.
I just returned from a Memorial Service at the Cemetary. I am in tears, and have been for the last 12 hours. AM I WRONG???? I hugged his friends. AM I WRONG???? I also honor the families of the fallen and those of the soldiers still serving. AM I WRONG???
Drop the chip on your shoulder, Scott. There was NOTHING personal in any of the posts that you got all bent out of shape about. ENOUGH.
