The following is taken from an email from my mom...

I had an argument with the Vet who says dogs should not have ANY raw meat, (they get parasites, she said), or ANY bones, raw or cooked, (they've had animals come in with intestines all lacerated from bones, as if they'd eaten glass - have had them die from eating raw food and bones, she said), .
It seems pretty clear to me that Vets learn all their nutrition from the salesmen of the pet food companies. Infuriates me to have them preach to me when I know they haven't done their research.
Comment on the lacerated intestines: I kept hearing that too, so when I decided to research raw, I went to the 2 emergency vet clinics in our city and asked the vets "how many times a month do you see lacerated intestines and stuck bones resulting from feeding a raw diet?" All the vets at both locations said they have never had to remove a bone from a dog's intestine or had to repair any lacerations from bones that were raw. They have had dogs who ingested cooked bones that got stuck and cause problems, but not raw. I also asked them if they see salmonella poisoning cases from raw, and between the two clinics they have seen a few, but those dogs were immune compromised dogs and could get the same thing from kibble, they admitted. My regular vet answered the same questions in the same way.
Good for you, Lori! That is the best anecdotal evidence I have read yet for raw feeding not being dangerous (for the sometimes stated reasons not to do it). Perhaps I will do a similar "study" here in Denver. There are several emergency vet hospitals close to my house.
