It's really fun to place one in a moving stream. Milkbones shoot the rapids.
They also draw the little sunfish in ponds, which is way more fun for Ripley than the food itself. He loves to fish, would stare into the water for hours if I had the time to let him.

Too funny. Can I go along??
Streams and dogs just go together!!
Spencer - Oak Creek (Sedona)? There is another trout stream on the Rim, and several in the White Mountains. Do I sense a Road Trip? Have fun!!
A dog has alot of friends because he wags his tail instead of his mouth.
Well I appreciate all of your help. Once again a lot of you confirmed my thoughts and gave me some new ideas.
I'm going to try the pool a little more, and try the recall because he responds to that almost every time (he's still young). Oak Creek sounds awesome Rob! I am definitely going to do that sooner than later.
The reason this all came up in the first place is, my wife and I are going to the beach in a month and I wanted to jump start on him swimming!
Here's another real big question for me. I was thinking about snagging a good life jacket for him. I have a couple good reasons and a couple concerns though. It would allow him to swim longer with less effort, I wouldn't have to worry as much about him drowning, and it might make it less stressful while I teach him the ins and outs of swimming. My concern is that it will cripple his ability to either swim well or want to at all without the jacket on, or does that even matter??
My GSD swims like a champ. My min pin is the WORST swimmer ever. She paddles frantically in the same spot and splashes water into her own face, then spins around gagging. So yeah, I'd say get a lifejacket in case you got a swimming dud like her.
The one thing with a life jacket is that you want to make sure that your dog can swim before you use one if you are going to be around water a lot, especially if there is even a remote chance the dog will be around water unattended. Like if you or someone you frequently visit has a pool.
Not all dogs have the physical capability to swim. Given the mix of breeds your dog is there is a small chance he might not be able to, since both very muscular and very tiny breeds can have a hard time. Your little guy is both!
You don't want to go and create a false sense of security around water. There is a chance that the dog might never learn that the jacket makes him float
A little fear can be a good thing in this case.
IMO they are only good if your dog can't swim and you enjoy boating.
