It might have something to do with the fact that I used to reward with one hand when I started to train
I used to provide a target made by my hands...putting the two index fingers together pointed down, holding them in the center of my body, kind of low. Like everything else, it's a cue you have to fade, but if your dog is used to targeting your hands, it might be worth a try.
Old school method was to put baby gates on each side and make a shoot for the dog to come down.
After that was done enough times we then put two pieces of 2x4 on the ground to make that same shoot visually.
Get smaller with the wood or whatever you use till it can be eliminated.
