I did not miss that they don't both belong to him; my advice remains the same. Prevention is worth a pound of cure.

thanks for the advice. I guess we are going to watch them more closely. There is a lot of land around the office so it would be nice if they could get along. I don't want to tell him not to bring his dog to work anymore.

You rang! no jokes today just a true story. I have an employee that has a cousin that owns a pit called smash. He works in a tire shop owned by his brother and he brings smash to work everyday. His brother owns two rots that live in the tire shop. The dogs played as puppies but as they grew older the rots stayed upstairs and the pit downstairs. No problems except for the day the rots came downstairs and attacked the pit. Smash’s owner was there and he was able to hit the rot that had smash by the throat with a tire iron. Hit that dog hard but just dazed him, the other rot backed off and he was able to save his dog probably by seconds.
Part two. The same guy keeps one of smash’s puppies at his girl friends house. She has two akitas that she keeps in the basement. A door chain kept the closed. One day they came home and the 7 month old puppy was dead. The akitas broke the chain. Moral of the story is they all used to play.

A little off topic, but what the hell.
That is a pretty basic concept. Dogs that are expected to live together need to be continually socialized with each other.
After periods of separation, you can't expect the dogs to get along just like old times. (Most dogs get along just fine with other dogs, but there are enough that don't to warrant concern.)
There is also another issue, pups can usually get along with any adult dog or other pup, but when they get older all bets are off.
Put the two together and you have the Rott vs. Pitt story. Silly situation. . .pretty dumb if you ask me.
Dogs need continual socialization with each other for them to consider each other part of the group.
Here is an interesting example from wolf packs in zoos. In captivity if there is a medical problem with one animal, they have to get that wolf out and back into the pack very quickly otherwise you will have two problems. One, the wolf will lose his rank in the pack and will have to reestablish it when he returns. This leads to fights because he will tend to continue his normal behaviors toward his pack mates, none of whom now consider him ranked above them. This behavior is seen within only 48 hours of separation. And two, the pack, after a longer period of time, will not even acknowledge him as a fellow member. This very often leads to the pack killing the "new" wolf in their territory. This behavior has been seen as soon as four months. It doesn't always happen like this but there are enough occurances that zoos have very strict policy regarding how long wolves can be taken away from the pack enclosures. There are also factors that make things worse or better. I don't know what all of those are, but I can imagine.
I was a volunteer at our local zoo in high school and had some questions for the techs after reading the policy and procedures manual for the wolves. Seems they had some problems in the past. . .

I certainly agree with you on that one Mr Van Camp.Additionally, a lot of people just can't seem to get hold of the fact that a lot of puppy "play "behaviours are simulations or practice for adult behaviour and that once the dog is mature a lot of these behaviours are for real. When the dogs are in that
adolescent stage it is all too easy for a game of
play fighting to turn into a real big ball of nasty.
