Ok, here we go again: *lick* *lick* *swallow* *swallow* - out to eat some grass. Not quite as dramatic as the previous time but the symptoms are the same, only milder. Connie
1) had more exercise than usual for the past several days,
2) it was very hot and
3) she was fed less than usual (because of the heat and exercise)
- just like the last time.
Connie also does lick-and-swallow thing (one set, not series) whenever she is very hungry, asking for food. Acid reflux?

Possibly acid reflux. Did your Vet have anything to say about this?
My female often wants to eat grass and leaves when she has an empty stomach. I still haven't figured out if the reason is because she eats the grass to make her stomach feel better or to make her throw up. If she eats too much, she will throw up.
But I really try not to let her eat this stuff because not sure of all the weeds etc in my yard, thus don't know what the possible dangers could be.
Does Connie throw up after she eats grass?
One thing I have done that has worked for me, is I try to feed a small snack either plain yogurt, kefir or some type of treat.
It seems to help her stomach and then she doesn't want to eat the grass. This has always been in the morning, when her stomach is empty, and I do think the stomach acids can be bothersome when they have an empty stomach.

Thank you, Joyce. No, Connie does not throw up the grass. My cats do. The vet agreed about small frequent portions. I don't want to take her there for testing unless I see something more serious. According to my reading mild cases of acid reflux are treated by managing the diet anyway. I'll try more frequent snacks and add more vegetables (steamed or pulped). At least she is not eating snails anymore.

Ana, I decided to read up on acid reflux in dogs, more because I wanted to know more about it.
Here's a link that I found, although you may have already read up on it:
http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/digestive/c_multi_gastroesophageal_reflux
It doesn't say much about a lot of swallowing, but does talk more about a dog regurgitating it's food and throwing up.
I guess the best thing is just to keep an eye on her as you said and see how she does over time.

Yep, that's the article I've read, among others.
High-fat foods can worsen acid reflux. The best prevention is a healthy diet that is low in fatty foods. Since the treatment of mild AR is a good diet which will do them good in any case, I'd rather not waste money on vets unless it worsens.
Connie does not regurgitate or throw up usually. Her swallowing does not involve stomach muscles, it all happens deep in her throat. When I put one hand under her stomach and the other on her chest I can feel the contractions in the throat but not in the stomach. The way she works herself up about food is absolutely unhealthy. She gets in serious drive. Could be that it creates acid overflow. Or maybe she does get scratched when she swallows bits of chicken whole if there is a piece of bone in them.

I am inclined to think it is not acid reflux, and more that it is something like a possible scratch that happened or a possible bone splinter, something like that.
Is this every single feeding she does this, before or after the meal?

She only did it three times. I had to start cutting the chicken into small pieces for her rather than giving her the whole leg or back after the torsion episode. Now it is usually 1/6 of the whole piece at a time spread over several hours. But since the portions are so small she just gulps them without chewing. I think I'll try a couple of things: chunks just big enough to make her chew and make it more boring by adding low-value foods like brussel sprouts and celery... somehow ... stuff every meal into a Kong... *sigh*

I'm not sure you want to put her meals in a kong Ana. If she's that wild for food, she may stress quite a bit trying to get it out. Maybe you could try Honest Kitchen for a while. Since you mix it with water you could play around with the consistancy a little and maybe not keep irritating what may be a problem in her throat.

Thanks, Steve. Ok, no Kong then. Don't want to do HK either because every time we tried both girls had diarrhea for days. Can I just mince meat and veggies with a cleaver and put into a large bowl? I can pulverize those chicken bones into paste
