Lol...I like your husband already, Barbara. Fortunately, 2 huge silver maple trees shelter this building, so it's only truly unbearable a few days of summer. I tell myself I'm going to move every Spring, but there are advantages like living 4 miles to work and a half mile from "our" park.

I'm not a fan of shaving the critters down in the heat. That coat is actually insulation against the heat and sun.
Barbra, as for that block of ice with a fan on it......I'm getting all teary eyed here!
Everyone on blankets on the cool basement floor with the ice and fan on a table. SIIIIIGH!
.....and the creature that lived under the basement steps actually stayed away with all of us down there.
Dad never believed in AC. Said it dried yer head out.
When he finally got it for mom (all 7 of us kids had moved out by then) He'd sit in the yard all day to keep his head from drying out.
I used to go up there just to watch and see if it would happen.

I feel your pain. It's been 112 & 113 all week here in Phoenix and July just started. Looks like it's going to be a long hot summer. I take the dogs out for 5 minutes and all they want to do is go inside, after wanting to go outside. I took dogs for a walk at 7 am and it was 98 degrees.

Not that hot here but in the upper 80s and HUMID. I can handle the heat to a point but dang. Pup and hubby on the other hand don't. Pup won't walk on the grass where the sun shines or the concert or the blacktop. But he only yips when he's gotta go potty so I can live with the tender feet. Good to be home btw , twin cities heat was oppressive to say the least. Add to that road construction and crappy directions it was nice to be home.

Hey Barbara---no a/c at my place. I'm thinking of putting a kiddie pool in the living room for the rest of the summer.
I forgot sunscreen while walking a shelter dog in a parade today. My neck is a ring of fire.
Oh Meredith, my heart and soul go out to you! NO AC?? I grew up without AC but since getting married, Doug has alwasy said he would work four jobs to keep the AC going! (That says much about how nice I am when summer hits!) A kiddie pool and a big hunk o' ice in the living room, with a fan blowing across the ice is definitely in order! (As is a frozen adult beverage of choice!) Absolutley shave the kitty down. Don't even leave the mohawk - he will just rub that all over you in revenge!
A/C is the worst thing that happened to the South since Sherman, it enabled Yankees to move down here and STAY!

Yup, and I'm one of them!
I can't stand the very hot/humid thing. Like you Barbara, I've been in heaven this past week here in central VA. Just perfect summer weather.
The only way I can deal with the weather is to be able to hop into some lake water on and off constantly. Originating in the Great Lakes region, I'm used to lots of real, and very nice, lakes. I was so bummed when I discovered that VA has mostly man-made lakes...not the same at all, but better than nothing, that's for sure.
I feel for you Anne...when we lived up in CT, I had to drive 80 miles to get to a beach I could take my dog to and use with her. We lived a 1/4 mile from the Sound, and could see the water from our house, but if you didn't own beachfront property, you couldn't have access to the ocean! It sucked. Of course, once fall hit, you could take your dog to the official beaches, but IMO, that just sucks.
This week is just going to be horrible. Oh well.

What a neat memory... kinda sweet. Yer dad cracks me up! "Gonna dry yer head out ya' dang fools!" (Mine was a TIGHT wad). Since he finally got the AC for your mom when all you kids left home, I suspect he and your mother loved the relative peace and quiet of having you guys all down in the basement with the critters while they ran around naked upstairs alllll summmmmer long.

As much as I love Virginia (except in June - Aug) I admit our lakes leave much to be desired. We visited some friends in Minnessota in 2000 and were BLOWN AWAY by the crystal clear, HUGE lakes. We could sight fish bass! Absolutely beautiful.

Can't believe the bizzar weather conditions you have been having in the south the last 6+ months or so. Crazy for sure. Gotta love global warming. UGH.

I know! I used to be able to go back up to MI for the worst of the summers. Zodi and I would spend all afternoon playing in the water and on the beach of Lake Huron. Alas, the Royal Treasury has had some serious difficulties that have prevented such an escape for the past few years. Sigh.
You know, Barbara, there are actually 3 natural lakes in VA. One is privately owned (wish that was by me ), and the other two are so far from me I don't even remember where they are.
Here's the funny part. When we were making the decision to move here, since I know I'm such a water nut, I looked at the maps and saw the east coast just a litte bit away (on paper), and I thought to myself, "hell, we can just dive over to the ocean! Well, what an idiot. Charlottesville is 4-5 hours from the ocean! You sure don't hop into your vehicle and take off for an afternoon of water fun from here. I still shake my head and laugh at myself every time I think of that.
