Also, only use the level of correction needed to get compliance, and always give her the chance to comply before issuing a hard correction. It sound to me like this was too much too soon.
But, I'm a softy, I guess, and tend to overthink these things. I like to give the dog a chance to succeed before going into hardass mode.

Richard: And I didn't say to not correct her, I said don't over do it. At this age you can over do it and create problems.
Chuck: Gotcha
Richard: I noticed that Stoner said that he may be over doing it a bit.
Chuck: I see.
Richard: And depending on what you are doing, in general obedience it would be expected that the dog should be very good at a year. I can't really tell you about the compitition obedience as I don't really do that.
Chuck: Not sure what you mean. Do sense some fiestyness in your tone though. Still love you man! Peace!LOL <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Heee heee heee.....I can be quite the ball buster.
L. Swanston,
I like your thinking......only I hope that is the case(dog was in pain...ect...)
Otherwise there may be a hand missing before you know it unless this dog is tought some respect.

Chuck,
No feistiness at all. I try not to comment on things I don't know about. I don't do compitition obedience (though I am attempting to get started on that some). My pup at a year is very good at general obedience, and not that good at doing the attention obedience.

Well, we certainly wouldn't want to see anyone lose any extremities, of course, but let's not be overdramatic here, either. I really think this dog was surprised, as Stonerspitbull did say that he normally just puts the dog back in a sit. To go to such a hard correction out of the blue, I think, would surprise any dog. Of course, not every dog would bite, but I think it's reasonable to expect that if you are fair in your corrections, you won't be inducing this type of bite anyway.

LSwanston,
You think that was over-dramatic? Ha ha...you ain't seen nothin' yet. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I take the other side of the argument. It seems like at times some members of the board down-play a bite. At 12 months there is still time to fix this, we are talking a simple bite. At 18 months a whole new problem arises. We could be talking about a dog that is willing to fight his owner. This is a dog that can produce quite a bad bite....nothing dramatic about that at all. I respect everyones opinion but I've noticed a tendency on the board lately....the tendency to soft-peddle things and IMO not be firm enough with this type of dog.

I've got no problem with firmness, nor with FAIR corrections. Unfair corrections are no way to earn your dog's respect.
It is my opinion, take it for what it's worth, that In this case, the correction was unfair, and her response was one of impulse to protect herself. Yes, it's alarming that the dog would bite hard enough to draw blood, and perhaps there is something much bigger brewing here. I'm just responding to this particular incident. I don't know enough about the entire situation to comment on whether or not the dog respects her handler, nor whether or not the handler is "doing it right". Another thing to consider is that sometimes people try too hard to have the perfectly trained dog, which can be as problematic as not trying hard enough (not trying hard enough=untrained dog. Trying too hard=dog that doesn't understand your expectations). I just like to add a little balance, is all. I totally respect your opinion.

LSwanston,
Gotcha. Nice post.
I will say that since I opened my freakin' eyes(thanks to Richard) and saw this is a female(less likely for dominance) and not a "rank" male I have a clearer picture in my head of what's going on as well. I suppose I should read the damn posts a little slower. Dumb ass I am.
That being said...PRONG THE SHIT OUT OF HER!!!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
