This would be Paroxsysmal Rage Reaction (PRR) and you are right, more common in Springers than other breeds and more common in males. It has sort of a seizure like quality to it, from what I have observed.
On a personal opinion note, I see a lot of aggression problems in Springers, unrelated to PRR. Just sloppy breeding.

This maybe the problem so how do you treat this? Is there a medication that they give the dog or do you muzzle and kennel it all the time? I'm not familar with the Spaniels breed.

This is probable an aggression issue, as DesertThunderK9 said, from sloppy breeding, but is the average DVM qualified to diagnose Rage.
Goodogu
There are a lot of nice spaniels out there, but there are also a high percentage of nasty spooks because of popularity. Cockers and Springers top the list IMHO.

Probably most vets could pick off PRR. This doesn't sound like it. More like a weak nerved dog in a bad situation.
Rather than bring in a team of *behaviorists* (scary thought), focus on obed to build confidence, get rid of the whackjob roomie and make an appt w/a vet who actually has an understanding of dog behavior. You may have to search far and wide.
Drug of choice nowadays is going to be one of the SSRI's (remember, we just talked about those the other day), not tranqs.
The stuff about not going thru doorways first, etc is how you demonstrate your alpha status to the dog, which may be important if the dog is prone to dominance w/the owner.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I looked up rage on the internet and seems to be very over diagnosed. The most common cause of the problem is, as you say, domanance aggression. That is a much better fit for this problem. When she finnishes obd work with the dog, she needs to put a prong on the roomate.

Total, complete, massive, unrelenting burn out from cases exactly like this. Over and over and over and over, fear biting, fear avoiding. Broken hearted owners all over the place wondering why they didn't end up w/a dog who is reliable w/kids or a good protector.
It's all about sloppy, reckless breeding and it's finally fried me . . .
Prong and cattle prod for roomie should work nicely, btw.
