Personally I meet a lot of dogs that don't like hose (cold water) bathes in the yard but do fine inside in the tub. If you go with inside see if you can't tether them to a bar in the tub. Once they are secure they thrash less and you can get done faster.
I am also a firm believer in ....it isn't killing you , get over it. I am not mean about it...just calm and confident. Start wetting down their backside and work forward. No one likes their head wet.
That said, as the owner of a kennel/groomer I get a lot of dogs to groom that the owners..."can't bathe, they throw a fit" . 90% of them are fine with me. A lot can be the person's attitude.
Normally, maybe twice a year, but with fleas and/or irritated skin I will do it as often as needed. Right now Nico is getting a cool water rinse every other day. Loki is getting a Bi-weekly bath.
How about shampoos? The last shampoo was a bio earth bluing shampoo. It gave everybody dandruff. I'm trying to keep the dander down as my son's girlfriend is allergic to dogs. Now I just wipe them down with a tiny bit of shampoo on a wet washcloth, unless I can't stand the stink of them. My black dog's hair cleans itself. Sometimes I'll rinse him though, especially after swimming in the lake.

Just about the same with me, with the seasonal-allergy guy getting bathed or rinsed every other day during the bad season.

I do the wash clothe thing almost daily. The first time I did it, Ollie really liked it. Now, in the evenings after he eats, we sit on the deck and I wipe him down. My kids think this is crazy, but it gives me a chance to look him over for ticks and such. They are soooo bad right now where I live. He's been treated and they just keep coming.
In the summer, I prefer to bath the dogs outside middle of the hot day with a head shower hose and avoid wash their face and ears. I guess they like getting a bath on a hot day. I don't have a problem giving them bath outside, but giving one indoor will be a different story. So in the winter I try not to bath that often, they hate the tub and can be freak about it.

I have heard that about Dawn. The trainer,GSD rescuer and breeder I train with has been using Dawn on her GSDs for years. Hey they use it on pelicans so it can't be too harmful
