Other than how sorry you are Lynne, don't rush to say too much about fault or anything. Just how bad you feel that this happened, very, very sorry.

So she doesn't seem to be litigious at the moment?
I would do what Steve just mentioned until things cool off.
Then, having been on the other end of a dog attack, her SEEING you take steps to prevent this from happening again says more than 1,000 "It won't happen agains."
Dang, what a crappy way to start your day.

I would bet your skills are top notch. I have followed your advice on this site several times with good results. Of course what happened sucks but it sounds like it was just one of those things.
Interesting that you mention "prong and back up collar". I use a back up with my prong too. Just in case.

I am praying that it all goes OK for you, things like this can be such a mess. Last year my terrier bit a neighbors' kid, I was beside myself. It really was my fault because at that time I was one of those well meaning but completely clueless owners. I called ALL trainers in our area and none of them was any help which makes me really angry but that's just the way things are I guess. Then I found Leerburg and they saved my dogs and my sanity. But I completely feel your pain, I was ready to cry. Luckily the family was very reasonable and I tried to make amends as much as I could and brought the kid a toy package. I was very lucky and hope you are too!

How about a pizza for her for supper since her day has been so crazy??? (Willie's idea of flowers but in an edible form.)
I consider you one of the more experienced / responsible folks on the forum, and if it can happen to you, it is a lesson to all.

I like the pizza idea too. So sorry this happened, and you certainly aren't alone. I've learned many an expensive and messy lesson the hard way, so I know how it feels to feel awful and responsible.
You're doing everything right, so just breathe. And consider getting a pizza for YOU too

Man, I hate it when that happens...you wake up, it's just another regular day, then BAM!, one of life's curve balls comes right at'cha. Sucks.
Like everyone else, I think you're handling things admirably!
Fingers crossed that noting else comes from this than lessons learned all around (hopefully, she'll have picked up some of her own).
Perhaps a box of nice dog biscuits for the pup in a day or two?
I think your stepping up to take care of the vet bills right off the bat will make a huge difference in what happens (or not).
good luck!

Thanks again for the words of encouragement to all.
The dog is doing well; barring any complications from the puncture wound on the back, she should make a full recovery. I went to the vet's office with the neighbor lady and talked to the vet and got the bill taken care of. Antibiotics and painkillers and keep the puncture open to drain...
I am rethinking everything I do with Chula now, to ensure that something like this will never happen again. Time to regroup...

Lynne
What a terrible thing to happen.
You handled a bad situation very well and are to be commended for taking responsibility for your dog. I'm sure that you paying for the vet bill, and especially for the lost day of work, really helped your neighbor feel better about the whole thing.
I hope that the Chi. and your neighbor both quickly recover.
You might suggest a Chiropractic treatment for her dog. A shake by a big dog had to really be hard on the spine.
Please keep us updated.
