I had a 3 hour drive from the breeder to our home. The breeder made it clear she would not recommend allowing a puppy on "public" ground until after the second parvo shot. We had all supplies necessary in the car for potty accidents in the crate (peed only once) and waited for exercise until we got home. We headed straight for the backyard for fun but she was too tired to last long.

I know little (well, nothing) about little puppies, but folks in our club talk about stops on the way home, about carrying the puppy from the car way off the beaten path before putting him down (on a leash, of course) for potty and leg-stretching.
I'm pretty sure that canine parvo (a puppy disease) is transmitted by puppies with the virus and not by random wildlife, right?

Connie you are right dog-dog, but it is very contagious. By going off a beaten path, that hope is to avoid a common 'dumping' ground.
Right, that was what I assumed ... that they carried the puppy away from places where cars park and over pathways, etc., and don't put him down until they are way off the public pathways, knowing that random wildlife is not the danger .... just other folks with puppies.

Parvo can live over 6 months without a host - on old stools, hair/fur, bottoms of shoes, etc. It's also extremely hardy, and not easily killed by disinfectants. The only cleaner we use at the clinic when there is a Parvo dog in isolation, is bleach. If you have a young puppy, and you've been out to a public place where dogs may have been, you might want to spray down your shoes with a bleach/h20 solution, before walking where the pup may walk. I know that sounds a bit extreme, but it is only for a few weeks. Most cases of Parvo I have seen, the pup is sick from the breeder - but that's not always the case.
