So, I have 2 gsds (9 mnths. and 6 mnths.). They both love people (adults and children of all ages)...so, this means good temperment???
The male is leary of other dogs...weak nerves or weak temperment????
The female is fine around other dogs....good nerves or good temperment????
Think more globably. Temperament can't be evaluated based on just one or two things. For instance, is the male "leary" (cautious) or "afraid". If it is the later that may be a nerve/temperament issue. If it is the former it is a fairly common component of, particularly male, GSD Temperament. They will often be aloof when meeting new peple and dogs. They are attempting to sort out dominance issues. They will appear reserved. This reaction is something that can be modified somewhat, if it is fear it can also be modified but it is more difficult and less likely to be as totally successful long term.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
If you have two dogs, one strong nerves, one weaker nerves. Both could be considered to have good temperments under familiar situation. The difference being how they recover from new situations. Right or wrong?
I see.
Well, after you've explained it like that I think he is more afraid (nerves???). He doesn't just act aloof (temperament???)....he lundges and barks. We are working on this issue though.
Well if he is lunging and barking this is a good sign of dog aggression. Not always a nerve issue. He is trying to prove he is alpha to the other dog. This is a dominance issue. Or maybe the other dog was ugly.
I dont think lunging and barking are always indicators of dominance. My male Dobe is quite dominant with other dogs (tho not agressive), but never lunges at or barks, and if he meets another dog he stands very stiffly and tall up on his toes and trys to put his head, or a paw over their backs. My friend on the other hand has a very nervy N.Amer. bred Dobe bitch who lunges out at and barks at every dog she sees, but that is just because she is scared sh*tless of everything, not because she is dominant.
WOW!!!!
After reading that I'm definitely going to research more on the SchH training I thought wouldn't be a thing for us....VERY INTERESTING STUFF THERE.
Not July 4 shy: I took my 5 month GSD to his first fireworks display. He wasnt afraid, infact for most of the time he ignored the fireworks. Occasionally, a particularly loud bang perked his attention. Can July 4 fireworks be used in lieu of a gun test ??
