Wow Aaron! Interesting, I have never heard of such a thing in humans. I never really knew what Mad Cow disease was really.
It is actually very crazy to think about.

Prions are the infectious agents that causes things like mad cow disease, chronic wasting disease in deer, and also a human form of encepalopathy.
It would be my guess (but only a guess) that prion transmission isn't necessarily a risk with cannibalism in every species. Among some animals cannibalism isn't even that unusual.
If what I'm reading about chicken-keeping is accurate, egg-eating among laying hens is a pretty common natural occurance--not something that an egg farmer likes, but it happens often enough that it's not abnormal. Feather-picking in chickens is even a form of cannibalism that can progress to killing and literally eating each other. I've already culled one bird for this behavior after trying everything else I could think of.
