I guess I never associated it with conditioning because you always think of that behavior as more of a physical need that's up their body to decide when it happens. But I guess there's not reason why it would be any different that salivating. Interesting. Makes me wonder what I could train family members to do!
Have you heard of biofeedback? And, everyone knows of meditation. Those kinds of practices can have strong effects on your autonomic system...all those things you do without having to apply conscious thought, like breathing, blood pressure/heart rate, etc.
Biofeedback is a lot like the elimination cue thing...get hooked up to a biosensor, and when (for example) the tension in your forhead gets above a certain point, a buzzer goes off. You sit there in the chair and close your eyes and work on making sure that buzzer stays off, or goes off as soon as it buzzes, etc. Eventually, you learn to relax your forehead anytime you want to. You have no idea how you're doing this, mind you; you just use the feedback from the machine to learn to make it happen.
As far as your family goes, positively reinforce the behaviors you want to see repeated ...behavior modification is behavior modification...
Actually, Lori, I've always wondered that too.
You're not any crazier than I am (that's not saying much, though)
I have actually been experimenting with behavior modification on some of my coworkers. It works!! Shhh, I'm at work now and I don't want them to find out they're being manipultated, I mean, trained, or do I mean modified?
tehe!
