All well and good SAR folks, but we're not talking about searching for someone nice to play with. . .we're talking about searching for someone the dog is going to have to fight.

Hmm...apparently someone forgot about the Colt M1911A1 .45 ACP, still the best autopistol *ever* made, and it's almost a century old. It's hard to improve on perfection!
Sig pistol are fine for Girlie men though.....

eeooh . . . another SAR folk 2 cents. VC, if I gave my dog a bite in a building search, (and off the Schutzhund field), instead of tug play after he found his person, I'd no longer be able to utilize him as a *SAR* dog, I'm pretty sure about that - LOL, he's so pumped up about doing them enough already.
I personally prefer to leave the searching for the *live* bad guys up to LE & PSD's. That's not why I became involved in SAR.
But seriously now, I have a question for you LE K-9 handlers. Do you notice or have you observed that your PSD dogs gets alot more animated - really puffs up and with more serious focus and drive doing a building search (not collapsed structure), vs. an open area or track? If so, is it because the scent is in a contained area, out of the elements of mother nature . . . or what????? I really need/want to know so I'm not just guessing about the difference in intensity in my dog's behavior in this environment. He is a serious (meaning focused/work ethic) dog about his job out in mother nature, but VERY noticeably different in a building search when we have to clear them in a search area.
Could it also be a change perhaps in me (that I'm not aware I'm doing at the moment),looking through a building behind him that would cause a change - more adrenalin he's feeding off perhaps?
Thanks!!! Hope you don't mind me jumping in on this thread with my question!

And btw you guys, I would tend to agree with Will about the 1911 before I'd even consider a puny P229 and I would NEVER use a Taurus 92/99 or Baretta 92 (9mm are for women and kids)...however, none of you are completely correct. The real answer is one of the following...
a) Mossberg 870 12ga
b) HK MP5SD .40S&W
or my personal favorites
c) HK Mk23 .45ACP
d) Remington 700 .308Win

What about drive in the search is there a difference when the dog expects a bite rather then his toy? I've seen Patrol dogs that are dual purpose trained to search for drugs/suspect and they get their toy when its drugs and a bite if the guy moves if a suspect.
I like Mikes selection of arsenal but isn't that a bit much if you got a dog on leash???
I like the 1911 and shoulder straped MP5 or Mossberge 12 guage for close in stuff. But a Berreta 40 ain't bad either in place of the 1911.
As in dogs I like a dependable gun, 1911s can be finicky. Sigs are slick but expensive!!!

"Don't worry about the dogs, they're pussycats compared to HIM!" So on that note, the dog is just a visual deterrant and honestly are only around to give me time to reach my gun, I'm the real "threat".
And I don't know that I'd want a PPD doing a search of my house "on leash", I'd cut that SOB loose and let him look on his own. If I was in an area where I needed that, I'd have my pistol anyway and the dog would just let me know where the threat was so I could avoid or engage.

Wendy, come on!! We're not talking about SAR!! Of course you can't do a bite!! How -F-ing stupid do you think I am? We're not talking about any type of building search, only about PP.
Frankly Wendy, you need to start your own thread for your other question as well.
As for the guntalk, although I like it, lets get back to dogs.

Don, you can train a dog to search with either reward and it will depend on the dog what is more motivating.
I'd be pretty worried about training a PPD, a bite dog, for a bad guy search with a toy reward for this reason, the toy reward isn't getting him ready for what you're really training him to do.
All kinds of issues with that.
