Welcome to the forum. Absolutely avoid dog parks. They really are well intentioned but a very bad idea. Read everything on the forum. There's a wealth of information here. And, if possible, get some of the DVDs especially those on puppy training.
One thing. I would not play or allow her to play stick. My sister's dog came close to being killed that way. Brew was happily playing with a stick that had been thrown whensomehow it flipped up and penetrated his throat. Luckily it missed piercing anything vital, but that was the last time Brew was prmitted to play stick.
barbie: I agree with not playing stick. My Cody had an accident with a stick he was carrying around. While running it swung out straight in his mouth, since he was little he was closer to the ground and the ground came up on him and jammed the stick into the back of his throat. It didn't stick into his throat so he just spit it out, but from then on, no sticks.
Great to hear of your new pup. The fun begins!
Apple Lou went to her new doctor 'vet' today. She was so good and is such a charmer. She has kennel cough, but they say caught way early. She started sneezing yesterday evening, and luckily they had an available appointment today.
Crate training 101 from Leeburg is a MUST for any puppy owner. I never in my wildest dreams thought any animal would enjoy a crate. I took 'word-for-word' the crate training from leeburg. Today was a test that should be a testament to any new puppy owner. My friends came over (since Apple Lou is on new medication, I am not willing to risk not being there with her 24/7) so my friends all wanted to give support. Lots of chatter, kids screaming and Apple Lou was happy in the crate with her new squeaky toy and a puppy biscuit. She didn't get any puppy sleep for the little-over-an-hour visit. But never barked or whined once.
She adopted me and Brooke (cat) less than a week ago and I already see the smartest, most loving new household member I have ever had the pleasure of loving.
My fear of owning a shepherd is gone. My respect for them have grown immensely. I am so glad I have the time and patience for her...she has grown on me faster than I ever anticipated.
I started loose leash training today. Didn't go that well... She likes playing with my feet and ankles still. Perhaps she and I just need more time to get to know, love and respect each other.
Hi Kelly, I am only learning about her day by day. She is smart, exceptionally smart. People were always amazed at my past canine companions...and she is remarkable.
BTW, today one ear stood up. Perky as can be. I almost cried (I am a sap.)
She's a cute puppy. Not all that different from what my female DS looked like as a pup. If she's only 9 weeks old, there's a chance those ears will stand.
