Bordatella is a snort and you would want to do it 2 wks prior. I have not had anyone actively symptomatic at my kennel but had two clients this season say their dogs got it soon after leaving. To note...both had had the vaccine. Which is one reason I do not require it. Some of the kennels are now requiring it and the FLU. At some point there has to be a limit.
Sonya, I just wanted to commend you for your common sense on this issue of bordatella, as a person who runs a boarding facility!
I wish so much that more people were like you when it comes to certain vacs and boarding.
I know that you have to protect yourself from potential problems that can stem from issues regarding vaccinations, but I just really appreciate your common sense.

I wish you lived around here! I'm going out of town around christmas and can't take my pups. I didn't find ANY boarding in the area that would accept titers, and let us skip bordatella. I could find one, or the other! Oh :P. I lucked out and found a house sitter, which is a better option all around.
Sonya, thanks for the information, I guess some vets has to try to make money on the back of our healthy dogs. Is a sorry state when if you know that something is not needed or harmful and you still do it for the love of money. Keep doing your good work, it will payoff in a good practice. Dan

Dan, please research bordetella vaccine before just randomly giving it.
In most cases, there is no problem.
My breeder (eons ago) advised me not to give it to the dogs I purchased from her. My vet insisted they get it. I thought it was harmless. For the next 8 years, both dogs coughed periodically. That horrid, deep broncial cough. The breeder said her dogs were sensitive to it. I wish I listened to her. Try to take your dogs to a trial or show just to have them strain on their leash or just get excited and cough for days. It was embarrassing to be asked to take my 'sick' dogs home from a trial.
Contact the breeder you got Chico from and ask if any of his bloodline has ever shown a sensitivity to it.
(btw, my dogs were Australian Shepherds, related, but not closely and it was the intranasal dose, they only ever got the one dose.)
Wow, Lisa. Sorry to hear about that. I am trying not to give any unnecessary vaccine to my dog. I can't imagine that experience you went thru at the trials. Wow. I will contact the breeder and see, she is a minimalist like me thou. Dan

I am hoping that mine were extreme reactions that aren't common, I would just hate for you to go through that. You two have been making so much progress and I really enjoy reading your posts. I want your posts (and you!) to remain happy and healthy.
Best wishes!
Lisa sorry for not getting back to you in time. Foolish me went and burn my left hand with some jumper cables hooking up to car batteries. Thanks for your comments I really appreciate them. I will research Bordatella and find out if it is the route I want to go or not. Thanks. Dan
