It still amazes me that we can elect a President that has not served in the Armed Forces .....
And only about 30 of them have served ..... only about two-thirds ....
It'd funny, but the science fiction novel Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein was required reading at all the Military Academies, and it had a government based on requiring service ( either military or civilian ) to achieve citizenship.
It was totally voluntary but service gave you the right to vote or hold office, with the theory being that a person that was willing to make a sacrifice for the greater good would be a more responsible citizen.
Needless to say, I loved the idea.
It does make sense that it would be difficult, if not impossible to govern/manage that of which you have no understanding or experience.

Seems that people north of the border aren't privy to the video...
It doesn't play?
Well, it plays the ads, but then the screen goes black and a voice says 'this content is unavailable for you'.
I have this problem a lot trying to watch any free video streamed by US networks, and some websites. Most of them outright say they only stream to American households.

If that’s not working for you Phaedra, try this.

I hope that incredible man never "drops". What a memorable contribution he's making... everyday.

What an international idea Mr. Rambeau. Your military instructors really had it right with that theory. If only it could spread and be a global requirement. The current criteria of money and sophisticated political speaking skills falls short of anyone I want leading me.
If all the nations’ leaders were true heroes or at least veteran to the tribulations of war, they may be more readily able to submerge themselves in the minds of the enemy, rely on their knowledge rather than technology and truly mitigate confrontational circumstances, resulting in not having to fight that last war.
I think you’ve got the answer to world peace there. I’m going to make that my “Ultimate Wish”.
Okay, I may have let my imagination run a little wild there, but what an inspiring post. God Bless our heroes and the Military Academies that train them.

Same here. If we want to watch something online, we need to hope that it's either run through a canadian channel or we're out of luck
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

This was awesome! Thanks Ed for posting this, it made my day!
Each state should start doing this all over the country as a way of showing our gratitude to these honorable Veterans!

Well said, Tom, well said!
It still amazes me that we can elect a President that has not served in the Armed Forces, that should be a mandatory requirement for someone that will be the "commander in chief".
Eisenhower's warning was prescient indeed. His successors' comparative lack of knowledge where it concerns military politics/spending has led to a military force which is both too expensive AND underfunded/undersized in vital areas. How did this happen?

Ross,
We always prepare to fight the last war, which makes preparations seem wasteful and inefficient. But short of a crystal ball, there is no way to accurately predict what the next conflict will be like.

Will, what I'm referring to specifically is the procurement process, which Presidents don't understand. A great example of this is the Defender, a giant gun designed by United Defense for a Cold War-derived, open-warfare scenario that all modern military experts dismiss as even a remote possibility.
Because of the lack of experienced oversight, the Defender was propped up with nearly $2 billion in taxpayer money, without ever actually making it to production. Rumsfeld finally killed the project at Wolfie's request because the thing was so heavy that it literally could not be deployed.
I'm on thin ice with this topic after a warning in another thread, but it strikes me that a military President would be useful in that he could tell the difference between a needed defense project, and a greedy contractor trying to swipe a billion or two out of the public treasury.
What do you think of Sec. Gates' actions so far?
