I believe McDonalds has killed more people than 19 muslims and two planes did.... Nobody's protesting their proximity to Ground Zero. Just Sayin'.
That's an incredibly stupid thing to say. People that buy and consume McDonald's food do so of their own choice, they assume the benefits and risks freely.
That doesn't compare in any way, shape, or form to 19 fanatics committing mass murder on thousands of innocent people. :mad
TOTALLY agree!

1) It will be as close as possible to Ground Zero in a building damaged by part of one of the plane's landing gear, scheduled to open ten years to the day of the attacks and given a name that specifically evokes Islamic domination of the West.
2) There is no 'community' nearby as it's in the financial district.
3) The Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf has links to the Muslim Brotherhood, has written a book calling for the USA to be more 'Sharia compatible, has refused to condemn Hamas in interviews and repeatedly blamed the West for Islamic terrorism including 9-11.
4) It has been fast tracted for development when a 100 year old Greek Orthodox church damaged in the attack can't get clearance for rebuilding.
5) It's not about freedom of religion, it's about objecting to Muslim extremists building a blatant monument to Islamic triumphalism as close as they can to Ground Zero

Thank you Dennis, you are absolutely correct.
Was it Christian Fundamentalists (aka "Bible thumpers") who bombed the building in Ok?
EXCUSE ME - but for once - I WANT THE OTHER GUYS TO BE TOLERANT OF THE US AND NOT US BEING TOLERANT OF THEM.
A group of Christians were told to not offer a prayer on the steps of the Capital of the US... can ANYONE honestly tell me a group of muslims who squatted down to pray in the exact same spot would have been told they could not do so?? I don't care if you are of the Jewish, Christian, etc... faith - in THIS country - you have the right to offer a quiet prayer on the steps of OUR Capital. And YES - that includes Muslims. If it is offensive to the Muslims, my deepest apologies, but please don't let the door hit your bum on the way out of the country. The same to ANYONE else who comes here to enjoy what Americans have fought and died for, yet which they then want to change once you are here... getting free this and free that and free....
We aren't supposed to chant USA, USA at a football game because it might be OFFENSIVE to someone? Bite me.
A high school kid was told to take the flag off of his Ford truck because it might be offensive? BITE ME.
Why don't all these folks who find out great country, this great Republic, so horribly offensive, stay the hell away?
JMHO. Bless their little hearts. Darlin'. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

My opinion? The developer is looking to make some waves, to prove a point. Maybe to raise the value of his property so he can sell it (nothing like some good ol' controversy to get people interested in it). Maybe he planned all this so someone would buy him out at a profit so no mosque would be built.
I don't see the mosque near ground zero as the problem. It's the guy behind it that is trying to make a name for himself.
And Lisa -
And I'm really, really interested how one can derive Christian fundamentalism as the reason behind the OKC bombing.
From a Time magazine interview -
"McVeigh professed his belief in "a god", although he said he had "sort of lost touch with" Catholicism and "I never really picked it up, however I do maintain core beliefs."
and
"McVeigh once said that he believed the universe was guided by natural law, energized by some universal higher power that showed each person right from wrong if they paid attention to what was going on inside them. He had also said, "Science is my religion."
In a nutshell, I'm not opposed to a mosque. And I don't think there should be mandated 'mosque free" zones. But who the developer is and the way he is going about it just seems a bit fishy and callous to me.

I vote for "You Mecca Me Hot" - I believe there is a strip club around the corner, oh and a McDonalds. I believe McDonalds has killed more people than 19 muslims and two planes did.... Nobody's protesting their proximity to Ground Zero. Just Sayin'.
Forget the mosque, lets put a Burger King there. That'll teach those darn Mc-stremists.

Can the BK serve only pork burgers, pork fries, pork flavored soda, and employ only gay men or topless, non-virgin (lonnnng ago not virgin) women? If so, I love it.
(And fyi: I have NOTHING against gay people or non-virgin women... LOL!)

Can't speak to the Greek Orthodox church. Don't know.
The landing gear you spoke about did land and damage the building in that spot...that was already a mosque and prayer center.
Yes that area is a financial district....of strip clubs and liquor stores and run down tenement buildings.. The building they want to replace is an abandoned woolen factory that the city was actually trying to decide if they were going to condemn.
To your allegations of the Iman they've been shown and proven to be patiently false.
And Barabra, our republic is secular. We the people do not give any religon more wieght then another. That means we the people do not sanction praying to any god in our name.
IF we the people HAD allowed an Islamic sect to pray on our capital steps while denying another religon, then you'd certainly have a bitch.
Spectulating on what would have/might have happened when it didn't serves no useful purpose in this case.
