Tragically, yes. With no crate.

her son has had two service dogs taken away due to them not bonding with her young son.
Do you know if these dogs were older, trained dogs when they got them?
"happily peeing outside and then coming back inside to poop"...
A Siberian Husky can be more difficult to house train, the owner needs to be more vigilant. I have had three as rehomes over the years, one my brother still has. The crate is essential!
I asked about crate training and she said "The service dog folks suggested that but it seems so cruel...."
Is she working with a service dog organization/trainer with this dog?

Tammy, the first two dogs were through a service dog organiztion(s). Yes, they were older, trained dogs which did not bond with her child.
This pup is not - she has purchased this dog on her own.
What I'm reading on line about huskies supports your experience with them being difficult to house train...

I would ask about the breeder they bought it from to see what type of line they are raising. Though my instinct would be that a breeder that sold a pup into this situation was not the type that would be too helpful. Sigh.
So for now, tell her to maker train, marker train, marker train and do lots of "nothing in life is free" type of activities. If it's appropriate ask if you can work with her son and the pup.
Plan B would be to talk about returning it and getting a more appropriate breed/age. It really sucks if the little boy already gotten attached to this one. Sigh. Or maybe set up sessions where he could come and "work" with another already trained dog to learn the ropes.

Poor dog. Barbara isn't going to be able to help this family unless she is a miracle worker. This goes right along with our recent conversations about pet store pups, backyard breeders, instant gratification, and "you can't fix stupid".

Meredith, I'll only change "you can't fix nieve or ignorant". I believe the mom meant well - there is no doubt in my heart. She read the "happy-go-lucky, family dog good with kids" info and went from there.
I'm no miracle worker.
I've emailed the person at Dream Catchers who is involved with this child's program and will first sit down face to face with her, then the mom.

8 wks old puppy, disabled kids and a single busy mom...
I'm no miracle worker.
I've emailed the person at Dream Catchers who is involved with this child's program and will first sit down face to face with her, then the mom. Very sad situation. For both the dog AND the kids. Because of mother's silliness their experience with pets is exactly the opposite of what it should be and teaches them all the wrong lessons. I am sure the course you are taking is the best, Barbara.

I have volunteered for two different service dog organizations over the years, one organization only trains and places service dogs with children that have various disabilities. They use Labs, Golden’s, and my last dog was a Lab/Poodle mix, at the family’s request. The dogs take about two years to fully train, many thousands of dollars, have had extensive testing, and task training. Because the dogs are being placed with children, the failure rate is high, finding the right match between child/dog is difficult.
I don’t know what tasks are planned for this dog, but the Husky is an Arctic breed, they love to run, and run, and run some more, they would not be my first or second pick for a child with disabilities or one without. If two fully trained dogs have not worked out, I highly doubt this one will, she perhaps thinks they will bond if she gets a young pup.

Tammy, this puppy (8 WEEKS) was NOT placed by any organization. The two prior dogs placed by an organization were older, trained and of the golden/lab variety. This pup was purchased by the owner - not placed by any professional organization (obviously.)
I don't yet know all of the mom's thoughts on selecting this breed... most likely its beauty, etc..
There is no doubt in my mind this is a train wreck comin' round the bend. Poor pup and poor little boy. More than likely, he is going to lose his third dog...

I didn’t think she got the pup from an assistance dog organization, but this statement made me think it was possible that she plans on having a trainer work with the pup and child.
I asked about crate training and she said "The service dog folks suggested that but it seems so cruel...."
Did she get this husky from a breeder, or an impulse buy from a pet store?
