What a nice little guy. Love his dark eyes. My male had the same dark patch on his tail, when he was a young pup, as Faroh does. It looks so cute. Enjoy your little buddy.

Thanks Anne. That little dark triangle marks the pre-caudal gland, which as far as I know is dormant in dogs, but active in wolves. Wolves also have this mark, so (not to derail with a controversial topic), many people will claim that a pup baring the the mark must be part wolf!
Would you say it's ok to let him sniff and dig at your hand for the 2 secs and then release the reward?
Depends on what you are doing:
Luring - his nose is on the treat in your palm and you are controlling the head this way.
Release - marker is followed quick (but not simultaneous with) the reward. Take your hand right away. You don't want the pup to stay on your hands as it makes it more difficult to phase out the hand cues later.
Duration - GOOD - quick reward - hands away. The better he gets the farther away your hands move.
Reloading (very common mistake) - YES - move your hand to the bait pouch to get the treat. Have the reward ready otherwise the pup becomes conditioned to the hand movement to the pouch. I think it's covered in the Food DVD.
All the mistakes I've been making as well Will have to be more careful now. Oh boy, it's hard. I get more tired than Haydn, watching his every move AND my own!
No wolf-dog here. Bodie's was very prominent, exactly like Faroh's. I had never seen one so much so like his until I saw the one on your guy. It is almost not noticable anymore, though.
Both dogs share alot of the same dogs in their pedigrees. That may account for the greater possiblilty of this showing up in both.
True! Can you post or pm me his pedigree? I'd be interested to see.
The wolf-dog thing is a myth (for anyone that didn't catch that), just like the black tip on the tail thing.
I just looked it up, and apparently a lot of sable pups will have some sort of mark. No doubt genetic lines probably play a part though. Does Bodie's tail have a different texture in that area? That's another thing that apparently sometimes happens...
I was playing with a litter of 13wk GSD's this morning at SchH, and all the sables had that mark as well, but it was 'arrow' shaped. (pointing down the tail) Even the Liver (is that actually a correct name for the color is GSD's?)/cream girl had it!
