Nice! I'm going to try that 2-leash idea today! Tracking with power steering- I like it!

What's the benefit from that way, Steve? The video wasn't too clear and I started to get sea-sick but it looked like the line was directly under both the front and back legs. Does that also help keep them straight?

I'm not a distraction to him with it like that and I can keep steady tension on the line to keep him from going too fast. He doesnt turn back on a track unless he thinks I'm asking for attention. Nothing more than a couple quiet "Good Suchs"
The collar is turned and the line comes down under his chest and straight back between his front and rear legs. I hold it a bit lower then the video to keep from causing another level of distraction though.

Ohhh, I hadn't thought of between the rear legs....
Going to track later this afternoon- I'll report on progress! I'm sure it'll be a great help in Koenig's sidepassing tendency's, and I bet it'll also help on his random thoughts to turn around and double check the track.
What collar do you guys use in training? The only legal harness for trials is the Boucher, correct? Our trainer told us to use an oversized choke chain, (dead ring) so large that it hits under his breast bone and almost acts like a harness.
What do you use in protection? We're just using his normal flat leather collar right now. I've thought about getting an agitation collar- or a harness- any suggestions? My trainer hasn't said anything, but I'm not sure I like the idea of letting him pull on the collar. I don't want to desensitize his neck to pressure, as I don't want to have to rely on a prong or choke collar forever.
Loose leash walking on a flat collar is the goal outside of SchH.
I'm so happy to have this source of information.

For tracking, he's just on a fur saver or prong. Most important with him is that I settle him a little before we begin the track so that he starts calmly.
I have him on a harness with the long line and a prong with a 2 1/2 ft tab. That, you should ask the trainer about because it will depend on your dog and what you are working on. I do have a nylon agitation collar from Leerburg that I like.

I've been afraid to try the prong for tracking. He pulls, HARD, and I've got to work to slow him down, but I'm worried about it not being as fun for him on a prong. I don't want the steady pressure to turn into a correction. That wouldn't be good.
I have Koe on his flat collar for protection, but he's always wearing a prong with a tab on it, just to remind him that when I say Fuss, I mean FUSS, and NOW, preferably! Silly puppy. On Sunday I asked for a Fuss after I outed him. He happily fuss'ed to my trainer (who was wearing the sleeve)
Ummm, not quite, but nice try dog! We all got a kick out of that. He tries SO hard!

I got a 2 inch wide nylon collar at Tractor Supply for $11 to use until I can afford an agitation harness. I also got a soft cotton horse lead to use with it because its soft on the hands and big enough that its easy to grip. The lead only set me back $6. So far everything works great! The helper doesn't want him on a prong with a tab yet because he's so new at all of this that he wants to get his confidence way up there before we think about putting him on one, though the more experienced dogs are usually on a harness and a prong.
For tracking I put his fursaver on the dead ring. And I work him on a 6 foot lead. He's not ready for a long line quite yet.

I'm a newbie as well. We were able to get to a schH 2 before my dog developed some health issues so I think I can speak with relative experience regarding the whole schutzhund training experience as a newcomer.
I think with a first dog your emphasis should be on learning vs titling. My plan was to take it slow but consistent. In other words, I was very faithful with training but realistic about a trial schedule. I made LOTS of mistakes along the way! Thankfully I had some great people and helpers who encouraged me to be successful.
There is so much to learn! If I were you I'd stick with "training and learning"....the goal of a title is a very good motivating tool but at the end of the day I still believe that the process is more important.
