AARRGGHHH! I had just copied and pasted six quotes about limiting water for an hour before and after a kibble meal and I accidentally closed the window. AARRGGHH!
I'll do it again a little later. The work is piled up on my desk.

Oh, I see. But then, eating all this dry kibble without something to wash it down? Yuck.

I have always lets them drink water at will, I had never heard to restrict it before and after a meal.
But I never feed soaked kibble due the risk of it being a risk factor for bloat.
We also always have quiet time before and after meals, kibble raw or honest kitchen..no matter what.

Connie - thanks I believe you even without the quotes!
It seems the problems with kibble are just endless . . . no matter how much we desire a convenient feeding solution.
With me - I need something to replace raw for times when we are RV'ing or sailboating and refrigeration gets sketchy.
I think I will just dump my Orijen and go to dehydrated raw. In Canada we can't seem to get THK, but I've just found an alternative in Smack Pet Food:
Smack Pet Foods
Would still be interested in the info on soaked kibble, tho . . .
Cheers,
Ci

Cindy, I was refraining from making that very comment.
I do believe that there are some MUCH better kibbles these days than there were even 10 or 15 years ago .... locally sourced ingredients, hands-on manufacturing by the company itself, no imported gluten (etc.), low-grain, and more.
But everything I have read, all my research (considerable), and my "gut" -- tell me that the other forms of dog food (if they are also well-made like the better kibbles) are better. My order of preference for a healthy dog would be fresh (only if it's carefully formulated; raw is not automatically good just because it's raw); commercially-prepared raw, home-cooked (same caveat as home-prepared raw); dehydrated; canned; and kibble.
By the way, I say again that there are some very good kibbles these days and that it's possible now to feed a good diet with them, particularly if variety is incorporated.
JMO!
PS I will find out about that digestion thing. Post-it on edge of screen.

The Canadian list on THK website is where you used to be able to get the product - it is outdated as they are no longer importing it into Canada . . . supposedly working on changing that though. I'm not holding my breath - things happen rather slowly in this country

Our puppy Josh is 14 weeks tomorrow. We haven't weighed him yet for 14 weeks but know he's 25lbs or a little more. He's eating 2 cups of raw and 2 cups of holistic kibble per day (3 meals total), and he's starting to look skinny again (when he spurts up in height his pelvic bones start to show in back). We haven't raised animals this young before so we aren't used to the amounts he's eating. Is 4 cups a day normal for a puppy? He's active, his poops are good, he's starting tracking training and doing pretty good so nothing wrong there.
His dad was 80-85lb, mom was 67 so we're expecting him to be big, can't imagine how much food he'll eat as an adult.
Hi Judy,
Back to the puppy - I'm in the same situation. My new GSD puppy will be 14 weeks on Friday, he's 23 lbs and will be in the same size range as yours by the sound of it. He was started on raw by the breeder and I'm basing what I am doing on the puppy raw feeding menu at http://leerburg.com/feedpups.htm. Zevi eats like a vacuum cleaner, around 2lbs of food a day right now, and he is certainly not fat. I'd second what others have posted about not feeding both raw and kibble - why not go all the way and feed raw completely? What are you giving your pup for his raw meals each day?

Hi, thanks for all your great replies!
Okay, we separated Josh's food into raw in the am. Kibble for lunch and dinner. We may have found part of the problem, today, Josh vomited a bunch of round worms...YUK. So off to the vet for dewormer.
My husband is teaching Josh tracking right now (training for his future job) and he's showing some natural talent for it. We're feeding part kibble because it's easier to have him eat it off the ground than putting raw on the ground for him to follow.
I'm looking for a photo Connie, I'll post one soon.

I just wanted to mention that feeding raw in the morning but kibble at lunch and dinner, very well could be setting you up for troubles ahead as well too. I think it would be much better to feed one or the other for a period of time, and you can switch it up if you need to. But mixing them in the same day is a recipe for disaster. JMO.
There have been many threads here where people have done this and had trouble with digestive issues etc.
So you are using the kibbles for training? Maybe others will chime in, other trainers who feed raw, what they use for tracking, and how that works for their dogs.
If it were just a little bit, maybe it wouldn't be such a big deal. However feeding two whole meals, lunch and dinner might be enough to create problems.
I wonder if you could use bits of cooked meats like bits of chicken or beef, if that would work?
It is good that you caught the round worms so you get get that under control.
BTW, can't wait to see pictures of Josh!
