Many vets are so used to seeing fat dogs, they don't know what a well-worked, healthy well-muscled dog looks like either.
Precisely what I was thinking.
Mals are obviously slim dogs in general and Roger does cover a lot of ground on his daily walks. I just want to make sure he's developing enough muscle to handle the exercise he needs, and nothing more.
Makes me seriously angry that most vets around here won't put their foot down when it comes to overweight dogs, but will gladly tell the owner to put MORE weight on their dog that's in ideal body condition.
My pup started to go through a skeleton-dog phase around 7 months or so. It was impossible to add weight at the rate he was growing... But he's finally just now starting to catch up to himself at 16 months old. I think when the testosterone starts a-flowin' is when the males finally start to fill out.
Oh yeah, at 5 months they grow like a slinky. One day they are a chubby puppy and the next day it looks like someone stretched them out like silly putty! Its almost impossible at this age to target an ideal body condition for them because they are growing and changing so drastically!
What kind of food are you feeding him? Without knowing, its hard to judge if thats enough or too much.
