I would use a vacuum myself IMO it would be a very bad idea for the OP to get into confrontation with this dog. Some dogs react very strongly to brooms/sticks, that kind of stuff. This is a management issue - if the dog is not allowed to get into a situation where she is resource guarding there would be no need to fight over it. I would follow the Groundwork routine till the decision is made about this dog's future.
