I disagree, Barbara.
My neighbors should all agree with me. And when they don't, I will stand in the yard and convince them until their ears bleed.
Brushing it off and walking away is too easy.

I have to admit, there is something about this which really, really appeals to me...

Sorry, Nick. Just being a smart arse.
Honestly, though, your discussion with the neighbor about dog training went on too long. When she wouldn't listen to you to not pay attention to the dog, you should have removed the dog then.
There are countless ways to bow out of a conversation pleasantly.

Make it a pink sleeve with "BITE ME" written on it.
You know, I think this might be a big seller!

Maude comes over to me today and "apologizes" to me for yesterday, but tells me that her way IS the right way and I need to listen to her. I tell her fairly nicely that her way is primitive and although it may have worked for her in the past, there are newer and better ways to train dogs.
She threw her hands up in the air and tells me I'm a lost cause.
Until yesterday I thought she was a very nice woman, and I have always respected my elders, but her true colors came out and she is one nasty old hag.

Old saying: The only thing two dog trainers will agree on is that the third dog trainer's methods are all wrong.
No need to even have a discussion of that depth, IMHO, with someone who is not looking for your input but only wants to give theirs ... just "Yes, I know there's no universally accepted method." With a smile and a period at the end of the sentence.

Nick, in your first post, you described Maude as "elderly." If she truly is (and I find my definition of that term changes with each passing year!), then maybe a little tolerance is warranted here. Someday you'll be an old man (it happens way faster than you'd ever think!), and there will probably be young folks who will think of you as a cranky geezer. But good neighbors can be hard to come by, so if it was me, I'd try to preserve as much of the good relationship as possible and just don't allow her to engage you on the subject of dog training.

Yep, don't waste your time , you did say "elderly", no winning, no convincing.
Take a couple of ill behaved kids out there, try positive discipline, hear what she has to say about that!

getting old is no excuse for for being close minded and recalcitrant. My grandfather attended college into his seventies and my mother who's age is classified attends courses and seminars as well and if I was fully retired I'd attend classes. When I get to the age that I can't learn something knew or understand a new concept, dig a hole for me I'm done.
