Now Falcons will kill/eat chickens and you let one run around a chicken yard!?
Bob - you lost me here. Seeing me shoot at a vulture is going to cause Falcon to chase and kill chickens?? (I'm sure I've misunderstood what you meant.) The chickens are enclosed in their own fenced area with a 6' tall fence and two hot wires running around the outside perimeter. Falcon thinks chickens are magic and make the fence hurt him.
Although scavangers by choice, in slim times without enough carion, they will occassionally attempt to take some small animals. A good friend of ours saw one attempt to get one of her young golden retriever pups. I'm sure it doesn't happen often, but there is no doubt in my mind this vulture yesterday was contemplating how to get one of my young hens.
I was just joking about "what if - how long to freeze". Feeding my dog an animal which eats rancid dead stuff just doesn't seem to appetizing to me. And I'm glad to know about projectile vomiting... I was wondering about what he might have "up his sleeve" when I was standing under the tree branch on which he was sitting yesterday! LOL!
Barbara
Does this mean I shouldn't go knock on your back door after dark for a surprise visit?
Hmmm, I've never heard of turkey vultures killing live chickens.
I googled it and found one person (on a chicken forum, no less) who claimed that two turkey vultures ate some young chicks, but someone else said that some yearling vultures (from a group of 40) played with their muscovie ducks. http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=294815

Black vultures will prey on live animals.
Debbie, come bearing some form of chocolate and you will be completely safe.
How funny... that post was mine from last year! THAT was creepy looking outside and seeing so many vultures around the coop. That thread, combined with my friend's experience with her golden puppy, plus what a few men where my husband works have seen, convinced me that given the right circumstances - they will kill small game.
