I don't know if this is an option, but there is a surgery where they don't use an implant. They cut off the ball of the hip joint, and train the muscles to support the joint. I'm not an expert on this, but I have heard of this surgery being succesfull in a golden, a dane, and a shepherd I know. I know this surgery is less expensive than the implant, too, but not all dogs are candidates.
Mental activities for restricted dawgs - Raw bones, puzzle toys: tug-a-jug, busy budy, the cube etc..

Many folks on the forum have functional dogs with less than perfect joints. Xrays do not tell the whole story. I'm hoping that with the right cocktail of anti-inflammatories and the right physical therapy (swimming?) you will be able render Capone relatively pain free and enoy him for a long time to come.

Really sorry to hear this Kristi, I also know of a curly coat that had both hip joints taken out and with hydrotherapy to build the muscles she's now fine not alot of exercise but she seems comfortable and doesn't move to badly. Also heard this can help make them more comfortable, Move Free Advanced with the extra MSM.
Good luck hope this can all work out for you!!

Wow Phaedra that is really sad to hear about your boy and scary for me too. My guy was diagnosed with sever HD at 9 months and I was told he would need 1 if not both hips replaced sooner rather than later. I can't afford that so we are doing what we can.
Kristi I feel your pain and know what your going through right now, the semi good news I can offer you is that with that diagnosis my boy will be 3 in May and is still doing great. He is on a glucosamine supplement Dasaquin and is kept on the thin side. He plays and does whatever he wants still he goes to the barn with me whenever I go and follows me everywhere. He gets sore sometimes and I avoid stairs with him which is easy at my place as I don't have any. At my parents I wince every time he runs up them. He does great most days and on the days he looks really bad he gets a rimadyl which I keep handy just in case.
Putting him on the Adequan will be good for him and I am hoping to get Cicero on that soon. Just trying to make sure I can financially keep it up once I start it.

It' called Femoral Head Ostectomy and has a very good success rate in dogs that are good candidates for it. My aunt had a lab go through this surgery and the dog lived a normal, active, pain free life.

I am really happy to hear your story Juliana! We do have stairs in our house, but with a baby gate should be able to easily keep him downstairs, his crate is already down stairs anyways. I am going to look into the Dasaquin. Is that something you need a rx for?
Thanks for the info Mara!

I had a Dobe that had a Femoral Head Ostectomy. She got hit by a car, (on my dad's watch, he felt so guilty for breaking my dog, that he paid) and broke her femur very high next to the hip joint. She was only 10 months oldIt was a long recovery, but she ended up literally being as good a new. Hiking, days at the barn, she was just fine!
It may be a good option to ask your doctor about for Capone.
