i have possibly the best cared for dog on the planet. i don't want to miss anything.
How much fish oil (long-chain Omega 3s) do you give? Do you also give Vitamin E so the processing of the oil supplement doesn't deplete the E in the dog's system?
IMO, this (long-chain 3s from marine sources) is THE supplement.
Of course, some chronic conditions benefit from other supplements. But if we are talking of dogs in general, meaning healthy dogs as well as dogs with chronic conditions, there is virtually no modern western diet that supplies anything even close to the long-chain 3s a dog should get. If you do a search here using fish oil, you will find enormous detail, history, and explanation.
You're kidding me!
It honest to God looks like I plagiarized your post.
I knew I was up against the clock beating you to a post about omega 3's, but didn't mean to quote you word for word.
All mammals *need* Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. That is why they are called "essential" fatty acids.
Unless you're eating grass-fed beef/chicken/etc, you and your dog both need to supplement with Omega 3 fatty acids; the easiest way to do so is with salmon oil.
Commercial beef and poultry are already loaded with Omega 6s, so there is no need to add those to the diet.
Vitamin E is necessary for the body to process Omega 3s from the salmon oil, so we also must supplement with that.
Some people choose to add additional supplements to their dog's diet, by my personal opinion is that unless there is a health condition you are trying to target, salmon oil and vitamin E are the only *musts* to supplement dogs with.
The shots your vet gives are vaccinations, which do nothing beyond giving the dog immunity to certain viruses. They do not improve the dog's health in any other way, and they certainly do not balance the dog's diet.
