My Newfoundland, Edward was on Deramaxx for the last year of his life. It was a wonder drug for him.
When we first started using it, he quickly appeared completely pain free, acting somewhat like a puppy again so we missed a day, thinking wow, he’s doing great, we’ll give his liver a rest for a few days.
He lasted about 24 hours and then the pain was back in full swing. It took another painful 24 hours for the medication to start to do its thing again. So by the time we gave the second dose, the first one finally kicked in. The vet then explained the whole pain receptor/cycle thing and how the previous day’s dose in his system was what was working on the current day. We were never to miss a dose.
I just thought I’d pass that on. It was a quick lesson for us but a very painful 24 hours for him. She was quick to prescribe morphine to go along with this for the really bad days.
Good to know, I didn't know about missing doses either. He had the Novox for about three weeks when he first hurt his hip last month and I noticed he acts like he is in no pain at all. Which is good and bad. He doesn't know his limits and wants to run and bounce around all crazy. He has much more energy.
