I'm watching this thread closely. I take Roger into the woods every day and once in a while we will go for hours.
I hardly ever put him on pavement, but he gets to run/jump/walk to his heart's content. He's 7 months old. Am I courting a dysplasia disaster?

We have a saying with our American Mastiff group.
"Don't ever walk them further than you can carry them home."
I learned why the hard way. It was beautiful, cool day out and we walked further than I realized. My girl just laid down and went to sleep. I waited about 30 minutes and once I realized she wasn't waking up any time soon, I carried all 42 lbs of her about 2 blocks to get home. Never made that mistake again.

I think exploring, climbing and running in the woods is just fine even for long periods of time. This is a very different kind of exercise than long walks or runs on pavement.
I might limit the jumping from more than a couple feet or onto hard surfaces just to be on the safe side.

I agree with Jennifer.
Being prudent with puppies is a good idea. But I think you have to balance the risk of coddling and isolating a puppy ("can't exercise too much; can't go out of the house for fear of catching something") against reality. Puppies aren't hothouse flowers. If they weren't supposed to run, jump, play, explore, then they wouldn't come into the world with so much energy to burn!

I remember that Konnie told me, "He's a Malinois puppy...not a porcelain doll."
I also remember Randy (IIRC) saying that exercise involving impact need to be limited. How much impact is too much? If he charges over a 3-ft-high downed tree in our path and jumps off of it, am I putting him at risk?

I doubt if anyone could give you the kind of hard-and-fast rule you're looking for. Is he jumping onto moss or granite? Is this the first jump of the day or the tenth?
You know your puppy better than anyone else and what his individual limits are. I'd say err on the side of caution as much as you are able, because It'll make you feel better about having done what you can to protect him. You can't do much more than that.

I agree that it depends on what he is jumping onto, and how often, and his overall strength and agility.
Wrong or right, to be honest I would probably allow my dog to do the same stuff..... Unless the dog is at high risk due to genetic factors or a breed with a high incidence of hip/joint problems.

Hahaha I love this! That is so something capone would do! I don't know that a mal would though. Such a couch potato mastiff thing to do. Love it

I've usually been told to limit pups walking to about 1/2 a mile or so until 6 months when they can go a little longer just to look after the joints. The hard part I found with puppies is if they stop on a walk, are they too tired or just that stubborn puppy thing where they just don't want to move anymore? Don't want to get in the habit of carrying the puppy home every time.
Personally, I'm not going to walk a 3 month old pup a half mile.
Sorry didn't explain myself to well, I meant that as the maximum for any pup up to 6 months old didn't mean that's how far to walk them, 3 months mine walked maybe a hundred meters just up and down the road a bit to get used to traffic etc.
